“Dear PoPville,

Someone stole my cherished cargo bike (Workcycles Kr8) from our garage behind Lanier Pl in Adams Morgan the night of Thursday, May 24. As you can see in the picture, it’s a funny looking wheelbarrow-bike hybrid version of the family van, so I’m hoping someone in the community will see it and alert me (202-556-0665) or the police. I do have Tiles on both the bike and the keys, and got an alert Sunday night that the one for my keys was spotted in DuPont, but by the time we got there, it was gone.

“Dear PoPville,

Thank you to everyone that wrote in with recommendations, $ donation offers, bike donations and beyond to help me find a bike for an amazing young man in need. A huge THANK YOU to Gerald Stevens on donating his bike and even doing a special delivery to me in DC during a road closure Saturday.

Here is Justin in all of his glory on his “new” bike about to make a delivery. He was speechless, beyond grateful and promised that he will make sure to pay it forward. If you see him cruising around the city, say what’s up!

Remember DC – we can make a difference… no matter how small!”

Ed. Note: And a huge thanks to Melissa for making this all happen!!

UPDATE: A new bike was found for him – thanks to all the generous folks who offered. This was an awesome outpouring of support. The best of the Internet, the best of D.C. Thank you again.

“Dear PoPville,

DC – I need your help! I’ve been working in a building in Metro Center for three years now. Since I’ve started, I’ve gotten to know folks in the building. There is the sweetest, most humble young man that is always in the most positive spirit that I’ve gotten to know that does deliveries from the salad place in the building on his bike. Last week coming back from lunch, I saw him on his bike and noticed that the bike was barely rideable. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Thursday morning (5/17) at 7:30am we are going to try to make a human chain to protect the bike lane near Trader Joe’s on 14th St. NW (Near 14th and T St.) The goal is to raise awareness of the need to protect cyclists and to encourage the city to do a better job of enforcing bike lane laws. This is the day before Bike to Work Day on Friday 5/17 so it seems like a good time to highlight the the need for better bike safety in DC, where at least 4% of commuters bike to work on a regular basis. Similar events have taken place in cities around the world with great success.

If you’d like to participate, just show up (wear red if you can) at 14th and T St. NW at 7:30am on Thursday 5/17. The event is being run under the auspices of the DC Department of Transformation (@DCDOTRA) and updates will be posted on Twitter under #MakeTheLane.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in the Shaw area near Giant, and last night awoke at 3am to some non-rat-related sounds in our back alley. I took a peek outside and three men in their twenties were riding down the alley on bikes and stopped under the lamppost about two doors down from my house. One man proceeded to start scratching/scrapping at the stem of the bike, as if he was trying to get something off. The other two men hung around and helped each other look over the fence of a backyard nearby. The man scrapping pulled something out or put something in a nearby trash can. Other than the scrapping, they were very very quiet and did not speak (I’m surprised I heard them in the first place). From the way they were acting, I suspected they had just stolen the bike but I did not see them commit any crime. The more I looked, the more the bike he was working on looked like my own (locked in my backyard), so I sprinted downstairs and opened my back door. (more…)

Back in February we posted “Thankfully the cyclist had pepper spray”:

“Feb. 19th: I watched a convo between a cyclist in a bike lane on G St and 13th and a driver escalate to him pulling the cyclist off his bike, and beating him up. Thankfully the cyclist had pepper spray, since my screaming at the driver to stop didn’t do anything.”

The victim updates us:

“the US attorney’s office decided not to move forward with the issuance of a warrant to arrest the suspect despite the officer applying for one and having a witness. Good to know that people can assault people in DC and, as long as a camera didn’t catch it, they can simply deny it and walk, even when someone else sees it.”

From DDOT on Friday:

“The District Department of Transportation today announced it will extend the Dockless Demonstration Project.

The pilot, which began in September 2017, will run through the month of August, allowing DDOT to continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and design dockless bikeshare management policies.

Dockless companies provide a new approach that enables bikeshare and scootershare systems to operate without physical stations. Instead, dockless systems use bikes or scooters that self-lock and can be accessed via smartphone apps. Such technology can expand transportation options in the District, and provide access in areas DDOT has not yet been able to add bikeshare infrastructure. (more…)
