Ground Broken on Fort Totten Extension of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Bowser today broke ground on the Fort Totten extension of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT), which will connect the existing trail from John McCormack Drive in Brookland to the Fort Totten Metro Station. This is the next major milestone toward the completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail.

“This extension is a tremendous example of how we are working together as a community to build a safer, stronger DC for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Mayor Bowser. “With this project, we’re closing key gaps in our network and providing a safe, off-street route for people traveling through the District.”

“Dear PoPville,

At about 4:35 P.M. Tuesday, I was standing on the northeast corner of 14th St and Rhode Island Ave NW, about to cross 14th street to go to Shake Shack. A woman with short hair was traveling on a bicycle southwest down Rhode Island (we had the light). A man on a bike riding north on 14th street cut across Rhode Island Ave despite the fact that he had a red light. That man cut both me and the short haired woman off while riding north. The woman said something like “what the fuck dude” to the man. He replied with “shut the fuck up you fucking dyke.” (more…)

Looking at the aggregate map on Transit, all that’s left are Jump bikes.

In NoMa, there’s a bike lane on M St. NE with dividers, which are constantly smashed and bent. I realized a few days ago that the culprit was the Harris Teeter truck, which runs over all the bike-lane dividers so that it can turn into the garage down the street. This practice is a total travesty, as it makes biking in the city more dangerous and intentionally damages public property.

Thought you might be interested in posting to encourage Harris Teeter to fix its practices.”

“This morning at 8:45 a man was exposing himself while standing in the middle of the trail, between NY Ave. & R St. NE. I saw something similar about a month ago, but it was not so obvious, so I didn’t report it. I called police this morning after I got to work. Please report to police if you see this behavior — if it is the same person he seems to be getting more bold.”

“There is a black male, about 5’8”, wearing a light blue sky denim jacket and pants, jerking off in public on the NoMa metro platform. The WMATA police have been notified. According to a nice man I was with, he is around the area often. Please stay alert. I was sitting on one of the benches as he did this in my peripheral.”

Last Night a Cyclist was hit in Grant Circle “The driver saw the accident and quickly drove away.” Witnesses Sought, Gratitude to the Good People.

“Dear PoPville,

On July 4th approx 7:45pm I was involved in a hit and run accident at Grant Circle in Petworth. I was riding my bike in the bike lane at the circle however a green Jeep with DC plates sped up and cut me off and hit me with his right rear part of his car. I was thrown off my bike and I injured my hands and knees and my bike was severely damaged. The driver saw the accident and quickly drove away. I’m looking for any witness who would like to help and testify. The police arrived at the scene and recorded the case. Currently investigation is pending. Cyclist Shot in Shaw just before 7pm Saturday Night

“Earlier this evening, at approximately 6:55pm, members of the Third District responded to the area of 6th and N Streets NW in response to a call for a shooting. Once on scene, the officers located an adult male who had sustained non life-threatening gunshot wounds to the lower extremities. The individual was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

“Shots fired in #shawdc 7th & O as I walked by. One bike rider was hit. He was shot in the leg and literally fell off his bike in front of me. Scary shit. Locals immediately called 911 and they were on site in 30 seconds!”

MPD initially reported:

“Alert: Confirmed Shooting at 1855 hrs in the 1200 block of 7th Street, NW. Lookout for B/M, wearing black shirt, long dreads on a bicycle.”

“It’s only a matter of time before he kills someone driving like that.”

“Dear PoPville,

Had a very close call today almost being hit by a car. As you can see in the video, he drove around a person at a stop sign and almost hit me on my bike. My question is whether or not there is anyway for the police to ticket/charge him? I didn’t actually get hit, but from the video he was clearly driving recklessly. It’s only a matter of time before he kills someone driving like that. I have his license plate and high definition photos of his face. I called the police but they didn’t seem to care. Is it worth going to a station, or is it a lost cause?
