“Dear PoPville,

I was hoping the community could share some groups or websites to get involved with to organize or find out about group bicycle rides. I’m not looking for extra fast/competitive riding – more like casual city rides on the weekends or in the evenings.

Thanks for any help you can give me!”

I know DC Bike Party, who else?

Related, from the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser was joined by community members and District government leaders to highlight her significant investments in providing infrastructure and mobility improvements in neighborhoods across all eight wards. The Mayor’s Fiscal Year 2022 #FairShot Budget proposal dedicates more than $670 million to fix roadways, add sustainable transportation options, and create new outdoor spaces for community use.

“The Fair Shot Budget has the ability to transform the way we move around DC,” said Mayor Bowser. “As the District reopens and more of our residents are actively getting to and from home, work, and school, we are seizing this opportunity to expand access to a wider variety of sustainable transportation options. These investments will improve the quality of life for residents right now but they’re also the right investments for our kids and our kids’ kids.”

The Mayor’s $17.5 billion budget will improve the District’s transportation system and expand mobility throughout DC by delivering: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

On Saturday, June 5th at roughly 2:00pm my boyfriend and I came across a cyclist who had just been hit by a car (or he possibly hit the car, that part is unclear). This was at the intersection of Lincoln and Franklin NE near the Edgewood Rec center and Greenwood Cemetery. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was parking and clipped a biker in Columbia Heights. He swerved but kept going and i tried to follow him on foot (I was a little flustered and apparently didn’t remember that I had a car and could follow him- which admittedly prob also would have been sketchy). I want to see if his bike is damaged or if there is anything I can do. I bike a lot so I am mortified i was that person.”

If this was you and would like to speak to OP please email me at [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans for a new two-way cycle track on the east side of 9th Street NW, adding a 1.6 mile protected bike lane connecting Florida Avenue/U Street NW to the north and Pennsylvania Avenue to the south.

“This project will make our city safer and travel Downtown more accessible,” said Mayor Bowser. “With the 9th Street cycle track we are improving DC’s infrastructure to make it safer, more sustainable, and more efficient for everyone who travels through this corridor.”

A new 9th Street NW protected bike lane will significantly expand safe bicycling infrastructure on the eastern side of downtown. Ten percent of all trips originating in the Shaw neighborhood are by bicycle, more than double the average bike trips District-wide. The bike lane will provide a critical north-south connection for cyclists to downtown, in an area that does not currently have any designated bike lanes. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Had a really weird bike theft incident and was curious if anyone has experienced a similar situation before. Last Saturday night (5/1), I’d left my bike locked up for a few hours outside a friend’s place on H St. When I went to ride home, I noticed my front wheel had been detached but was at least still there. I assumed someone had tried to steal it but didn’t succeed, and I managed to get it back on and rode home without giving it much more thought. I haven’t ridden since last weekend, and it took me until this morning to realize that the front wheel on my bike is not actually my wheel. (more…)

Ed. Note: If anyone happens to spot the bike you can email me at [email protected] and I’ll pass on to OP.

“Dear PoPville,

As I was riding my bike home tonight, I hear an accident behind me on the corner of Upshur NW and Kansas Ave NW right in front of the Petworth Library. I head over to see if the drivers were ok and call 911. In the rush to make sure the drivers were ok, I did not lock my bike up but leaned it against the railing of the library.

As I am on the phone with 911, two detectives from Third District walk up and tell me they’ve called in the accident. As they tell me this, other bystanders start yelling at me that my bike is being stolen. I turn around and it’s gone. I tell the two detectives that my bike was just stolen as I was talking to them and the response I get was “sorry that’s for 4D, we’re 3D. You’ll need to file a report with 4D” and walked away from me back to their car. (more…)
