A little over a month ago we took a look at this building on the east side of 14th and Florida. While I still like the angles I’m not so sure about the choice of brick. It seems to be getting bricked with that light tan color. I’m not really a big fan of this style. You guys?

On a related note, on the west side of 14th and Florida the sidewalk has reopened!

I seem to recall folks are not huge fans of this Safeway. From an email:

Wow, it looks like a nice large open layout. It doesn’t seem to have too many original details. But is sure seems huge. So the price for this unit is $629,500. All of the units have 2 beds and 2.5 baths. Unit #3 is going for $549,500. Unit #2 is going for $529,500. And Unit #1 is going for $439,500. Any of these sound reasonable? What do you think of the renovations?

Haydees is located at 3102 Mount Pleasant Street, NW. The review on Yelp are quite scattered. But I seem to recall that there are some readers who are pretty big fans. Is Haydees a thumbs up or down?

Last week I mistakenly thought this spot, next to Marvin’s on 14th Street and U, was going to become Patty Boom Boom. I was corrected that I had originally posted the correct location of the future Patty Boom Boom around the corner at 1359 U Street. So, I did a little digging and got an unconfirmed report of what the above may become. A very reliable source tells me – a 24 hour diner! Again this is unconfirmed. But wow, I think a 24 hour diner in that spot would be ridiculously awesome and surely ridiculously crowded. Let’s hope it’s true.

Welcome to the third edition of PoPtrekker. In case you missed it, you can see Vol. 2 here. This week I visited Anacostia. I’d like to thank Jacqueline who filmed and edited this volume. (Ed. Note: Intangible Arts will be back to film and edit Vol. 4 so don’t hesitate to email me your suggestions for future PoPtrekkers.) I’d also like to thank David from the blog And Now, Anacostia who created a map for me as I had never been to Anacostia before. Good times.

I’ve noticed this sign at Pete’s in Columbia Heights a number of times. So I asked someone at the shop who were they quoting as “Best Pizza in DC”, City Paper? Washingtonian? Nope they are self declared. There was a weak explanation that many of their patrons tell them it is so. Brilliant! Don’t get me wrong I like their pizza and all but I think it’s a bit disingenuous to declare oneself the “Best”. I guess I’m troubled that they used quotation marks. Although, next week City Paper will release their best of issue so maybe they’ll win for the pizza category…

Maybarduk’s experimental indie rock, electronic & acoustic songs reflect the unique combination of cultures in which he grew up…a North American in West Africa & Latin America; a political wordsmith and punk rocker with a penchant for Spanish classical guitar.

Born on July 4, 1979, to an American diplomat and a social worker in Mexico City, Maybarduk has since lived in Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Cuba and Venezuela and across the United States from rural Maine to Berkeley, California, where he attended law school and fronted indie rock band Last Clear Chance. In 2007, he joined the non-profit advocacy group Essential Action, and now divides his time between music and work in Washington, D.C. and the Global South, helping countries improve access to critical medicines.

In “Darker Days,” Maybarduk sings, “I only want to be of use. To protect a people or an idea.” Many of his songs wrestle with the challenges of creating both personal and political change.

Maybarduk’s sounds range from innovative sample-based compositions (“Siddhartha on his raft”) to conversations on Spanish guitar (“Sundays”) to full-tilt post-punk rock (“Dom Helder Camara”). He self-released his first album, “Passengers,” a narrative of introspective songs bridged by field recordings, on New Year’s of 2007.

Maybarduk released his second album “No Hay Pueblo Vencido” (“No Defeated People”), produced by J. Robbins (Jawbox/Channels), on March 19, 2009. Maybarduk and Robbins invested months imagining arrangements and calling in established musicians of the mid-Atlantic indie scene to draw out the character of each song. “Vencido” compels as pop, as art, and as statement on living unique possibilities despite oppression.

One more music option after the jump. (more…)
