Washingtonian reports:

“the concept was the brainchild of two friends who wanted cupcakes one day but didn’t feel like schlepping to Georgetown to get them. Samuel Whitfield III, a former attorney, and Kristi Cunningham, who worked in freight forwarding, gave up their careers to peddle their sweets, baked by a third partner in the business. The cupcakes, which sell for $3 apiece, come in five flavors: classic vanilla, classic chocolate, red velvet, chocolate mocha, chocolate with vanilla frosting.”

Remy Martin 1738 free samples, drink
Discounts and complimentary shoe shine event at the Dupont Hotel, 1500
New Hampshire Ave, NW Friday November 13 6pm-9pm

“Perfect opportunity for folks to stop by after work, get their rain soaked shoes shined and have a cocktail on Remy Martin 1738.”

This Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11-3, we will hold a community meet and greet at the Trolley Park at 11th and Monroe, NW. Representatives of the mayor’s office, 3rd district police station, ANC and parks and recreation will be there to answer neighbors’ questions and address their concerns. We will have a pizza party at 12:30. As you may be aware, this park has been a “drunk” park for many, many years and finally! the city has committed funds to renovate the park. Additionally, the police are now patrolling the park three times a day and have no tolerance policy for drinking/drugs in the park. We hope to get the park turned around soon.”

“Dear PoP,

I just saw (last week) four kids ages maybe 12-14 at the Columbia Heights metro station in front of Potbelly’s with bolt cutters stealing one bike and trying to cut another one lose. There were plenty of people around which did not seem to disturb them. I just happened to walk by and they definitely realized I was noticing their ‘work’, but I was totally unsure how to react; whether to confront them or call the police. In the end I realized calling 911 would not get the cops there in time, and I was afraid of consequences directly approaching them. Where is the police when you need them? In the end I saw a police car in front of the target and ran over there, but there was no officer around. Maybe that threatened the kids as they were taking off once I got to the police car and left the attempt on the second bike unfinished (I got to meet the owner later on coincidentally, as she just came back and told her about her luck), but the other bike got taken. How would you react in such a situation and I am curious to hear other peoples suggestions on what could have been done maybe also to keep the other bike from being taken away?

I guess I will keep storing my different bikes with me in my flat.”

This is a very tough question. I think if it is daytime and there are many people around, it would be ok to confront them and say something like, “hey what are you doing? What’s going on?” or something like that. The video up top was done by two brothers in NYC who show exactly how easy it is to steal a bike without anyone saying anything in broad daylight. What do you guys recommend in this situation?

Last week I mentioned that the new building, View 14, at 14th and Florida is open for leasing. The project manager had a few clarifications:

“1. The pricing on forrent.com was not accurate. Our 2 bedroom / 2 Bath units currently start at $2,885, not at $3,870 as was noted in the comments

2. Yes, there is secured underground parking, with approximately 150 parking spaces for lease. We also have Zipcar carsharing on site.

3. The Comcast antenna tower will be removed soon. In its place, smaller dishes will be installed on the roof of View 14.

4. Invitations to the VIP party have not yet been sent to those that have registered on our list. We are gathering the names and our leasing team will send out an invitation via email as the event approaches.

If there are any further questions, please visit www.view14.com or contact our leasing staff at 202.797.1414.”

The flier says:

“Just Reduced! Contract fell thru and back on the market. Traditional brick fixer upper RH on a quiet residential street featuring rear yard accessable by alley, rear entrances to main level, basement, attractive hardwood floors. 3 blocks to Metro. Heat, water, electric & appliances are functional. This is an estate sale, not short sale or bank owned. FHA or conventional ok.”

More info and photos found here.

As far as fixer uppers are concerned this one looks to have good bones. Any guesses on the cost to fix it up? Given that does $310,000 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/2 bath?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. Anything good happen this week?

Perusing the original Good Deal or Not (GDoN) post of this property, it struck me that an overwhelming majority called “good deal”.  Frequent GDoN readers know that this, indeed, is a rarity.  That was at the original list price of $345,000., so $315,000. plus $12,600. toward closing costs should look pretty sweet.  For reference, recently converted condos down the street (the last one I listed at 2608 Sherman, 2BR, nicely upgraded and staged, sold in May 2009 for $299,990. with a $7500. subsidy) are selling in a similar price range.

Some mentioned that Sherman is a busy street to be on, and for sure, that was the major objection I heard when I had my client’s condo on the market.  The lot size is a mere 869, but includes a bit of outdoor space.  Love it or hate it, as one reader mentioned, the new owners should never have trouble giving directions to their very yellow house.  I admire the listing agent’s optimism in noting that one of the conveniences of the property is that it is “close to Schools”.

The recent Seller purchased the property back in January 2009 when it was a foreclosure.  The listing from that time period shows that it was priced at $189,000., and settled at $180,000.  It was purchased with cash.

Wow, this is sad news. Capitol Hill Bikes located at 709 8th St SE on Barracks Row is liquidating their inventory. Thanks to a reader for sending:

“After 9 years, we’ve lost our lease and must liquidate our entire inventory!

Bikes, clothing, accessories, parts, fixtures–Everything must go!

Come in early for the best selection! Store opens at 11 a.m. sharp.

Up to 75% off

We’ve been proud to serve the Capitol Hill community for these many years and we hope to be able to do so again. Until then, we must liquidate and vacate our current space. Please show your support by doing some early Christmas shopping or getting that new set of wheels you’ve been wanting.”

Incidentally, another reader asks:

“Where’s the best place in DC to get a retro bike? What are the top 5
bike stores in the city..not for road bikes, but for casual bikes.”

I know there were lots of fans of Rollin Cycles at 1320 14th Street, NW and the Bike Rack located at 1412 Q Street, NW.
