“After reading recent reporting indicating that the Trump Administration plans to install permanent fencing around Lafayette Square, the public park in front of the White House, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced her intention to introduce a bill to prohibit permanent fencing at the park.
“Lafayette Square belongs to the people, not to the president. This bill is about keeping faith in the idea that democracy works best in the open, where the First Amendment protects citizens’ rights to assemble, speak, and be seen and heard by their government,” Norton said. “While I understand the importance of protecting the White House, it’s already surrounded by a 13-foot-high fence. We can and must maintain our commitment to security without sacrificing public access by using the least restrictive means necessary to address security concerns. Just as I oppose permanent fencing at the Capitol and the Supreme Court, I oppose turning Lafayette Square into another restricted zone separated from the public by intimidating barriers. (more…)

Vlad, our totally tubular two-toed sloth, turns 40 today! 🎉 Small Mammal House keepers threw him an 80s pop culture birthday bash that was awesome to the max. 😎 💜 Inside his Purple Rain(forest) habitat, they placed enticing tulip poplar, elm, sweetgum and sycamore leaves for Vlad to enjoy. As a special sweet treat, he chowed down on some slices of apple, mango, grape, pear and orange, too. 🎂 (more…)
Huge news from the Caps:
“The Washington Capitals have re-signed captain Alex Ovechkin to a one-year contract extension, Senior Vice President and General Manager Chris Patrick announced today. Ovechkin will earn $1 million in salary, a $4.75 million games-played bonus (10 games) and a $3.25 million signing bonus. Ovechkin’s contract will carry an average annual value of $4.25 million.
“I’m back!” said Ovechkin. “Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win. I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”
