Baseball Opening Day Family Festival at National Postal Museum

On Saturday April 6, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. the National Postal Museum will host a fun-filled family festival to kick off the Major League Baseball season and the one year countdown until the opening of their exhibition “Baseball: America’s Home Run.”

All ages are welcome at this free program. In addition to an array of food vendors, visitors can enjoy the following activities:

19th Century Baseball Re-enactors:

Explore origins of our national pastime with the Diamond State Base Ball Club of Delaware, the Mutual Base Ball Club of New York and the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia. Guests will not only learn how the game has evolved over time, they will also be able to partake in old bat and ball games.

DC Emancipation Day Celebration — Parade, Concert, Fireworks!

This year we look forward to celebrating one of the reasons that makes living in the District of Columbia so special — all while coming together with a community of family and friends from all 8 Wards.

In April, the District celebrates Emancipation Day to recognize the freedom of more than 3,000 D.C. slaves which took place on April 16, 1862.

The D.C. Emancipation occurred eight months before President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Two and a half years later, slavery was officially abolished nationwide and commemorated each year on June 19, also known as Juneteenth.

Get the Royal Treatment at the Choir of King’s College Performance at the National Cathedral

One of the most celebrated choir groups in the world is making a rare U.S. visit, and Washington National Cathedral is host to one of only three stops on the tour.

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, can trace its history back to the 15th century, when the College was founded at the University of Cambridge. And on Saturday, March 30, the renowned boys choir will sing the British choral music it has mastered over several centuries.

The boys will perform 14 songs, highlighted by two organ solos belted out on the 10,647 pipes of the Cathedral’s Great Organ. The compositions include works by Monteverdi, Palestrina, Purcell, Britten and Vaughn Williams. This is the last chance for local audiences to experience the choir under the direction of Stephen Cleobury, who is retiring.
