Little Vietnam sign lit up on Upshur Street, NW

828 Upshur Street, NW, previously home to Himitsu and many others

Thanks to Shawn and Shira for sending from Petworth: “New sign spotted above the door in the old Magpie & The Tiger space. No other signage and still has some “for lease” signs in the windows”

“A “Little Vietnam” sign just showed up at the old Magpie space.”

Updates when we learn more about the plans. And speaking of The Magpie and the Tiger, from a press release:

1320 H Street, NE from the day

“Magpie and the Tiger, a Korean-American concept by husband and wife Chef team Caleb Jang and Roren Choi, present a dinner series, Gachi Gachi!, hosted at 1320 by Please Bring Chips. The first chef residency since their short time in Petworth, Gachi Gachi! will expand on what they started at the restaurant while highlighting their personal and professional growth.

The menu will feature a compilation of dishes such as seasonal kabocha squash and kale banchan, tteokgalbi – a Joseon dynasty royal beef dish, and hodugwaja – a famed walnut pastry from the streets of Korea.

The Magpie and the Tiger are subjects of (jakhodo) and (kkachi horangi) (minhwa) paintings. The magpie is a symbol of good luck and prosperity, and the tiger is the spiritual protector of the Korean people.

“Gachi” translates to ‘together’. Through the Gachi Gachi pop-up series, Caleb and Roren come together to bring their personal take on Korean-American cuisine. “As children of first-generation immigrants from Korea, we share a deep connection with both our heritage and our upbringing here in America. Kimchi hits our hearts the same as a big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs or an italian beef sandwich! We are excited to bring you a slice of our lives through food – sharing not only our culture, but also our life experiences on your plate.”– Roren Choi

The Magpie and the Tiger: Gachi Gachi! Pop-up will begin dinner service on Friday, November 11 and run through Sunday, December 11.

There are two ticketing types available:

$195 per person will include alcoholic beverage experience

$125 per person for non-alcoholic experience

Tickets are available for purchase here.

The ticketed experience includes a set menu which consists of four courses, including 3 banchans, small plate, entree and dessert. Guests will also receive an additional sweet for takeaway. Though there are options to choose from for the small plates and entrees offered, there will be availability to purchase additional banchan, small plates and entrees a la-carte if guests are looking to enjoy the whole menu.

The alcoholic beverage programming will be focused on wine, makgeolli and sake, with each beverage experience including one pairing per course. The non-alcoholic beverage experience will include one pairing per course as well. There will also be an a la carte beverage menu that will feature cocktails, wine by the glass/bottle, and non-alcoholic drinks.

Following Magpie and the Tiger, Please Bring Chips will host month-long residencies with chefs Christian Irabien and Marcelle G. Afram at their headquarters, 1320.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
