“Vibrant community gathering place” coming to Shaw

1322 9th Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I saw this placard up on the 1300 block of 9th Street NW, in the empty overgrown lot next to Daryl Carter’s design studio and Thally. Hard to read, but the Nature of Operation states: Vibrant community gathering place serving kitchen-garden produce, District-made beers and spirits, grilled meats, hearth-baked breads and pastries. All cooking will be done using a handmade wood-burning oven and grills. Seating inside for 8, Sidewalk cafe seating for 16, Summer garden space for 323.Total Occupancy – 386.

Sounds awesome and will be a good use of this otherwise empty lot! Welcome to the neighborhood!”

City Paper reported it’s from:

“The LLC was registered by David Rosner, one of the co-owners of Etto and Garden District.”

Updates when more info is known.

  • Woohoo! So excited! Also looking forward to seeing what ends up opening on the upcoming retail spaces on 11th. And for the new pizza place and buttercream bakeshop!

  • May be some serious competition for Dacha, but that might not be such a bad thing considering Dacha’s lines/crowds.

  • This seems like a perfect use for this space. Sad I will miss it!

  • Great to see a vacant lot get developed and I’m sure they will do well.

Not sure why nobody wants to call a bar a bar anymore. “Vibrant Community Gathering Place” must have caused lots of eye-rolling down at DCRA and ABRA.

    • This doesn’t really sound like a bar to me.as much as a restaurant. Or straddling the line between the two.

Outdoor seating for 300+ and indoor/patio seating for just 25, especially coming from the owner of Standard, definitely sounds like it will be a bar (that might happen to have some decent food available).

    • “Not sure why nobody wants to call a bar a bar anymore.”
Because you’ll get the NIMBY’s out in droves. And many of the neighbors living closest to Dacha are up in arms about the noise. Call it anything but a “bar” and it at least has the veneer of being something other than a bar.
This place will be Dacha v2.0. But they can’t say that during the permitting process.

Actually the placard reads “Summer Garden Space for 333”, which is half of 666. Coincidence, or not!

It really does (the 333 part that is, the extrapolation was my doing).
