Ben’s Chili Bowl Hoping to Open H Street, NE Location by “End of the Year”

10th and H St, NE

Back in Sept. 2012 we noted the new signs for a future Ben’s Chili Bowl at the corner of 10th an H St, NE. I noticed the signs were no longer there and little progress had been accomplished so I wanted to check on their status. Owner Nizam Ali tells me that plans are moving forward and “Our goal is to open before the end of the year.”

  • I’ll say it, I think this place is overrated.

    • I think most DC residents would agree. :)

      • I think most DC residents would agree that most things in DC are overrated and are SO much better in NYC.

        • Eh, I think the Ben’s Chili Bowl is DC is a bit better than the one in New York.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to this, even though I never go to the U Street location. I don’t care about the hype but it will be nice to have a diner-like restaurant on H.

    • Basically agree but since this one will be convenient to me, I’ll actually go now.

    • It’s a part of the fabric of this city. Bad chili and all. I say KUDOS to the Ali family. They are amazing people

    • The food is nothing to write home about. The original location in Shaw has cultural historical significance, but it’s not like you can replicate that across town.

  • you know what’s good about ben’s? it’s fun and casual and not a “foodie” in sight.

  • You know, so many people on here complain at rumors of any chain restaurants coming to H St, but then people also complain when a DC institution is opening a location there. I don’t get it, but I for one (as both a DC and H St resident) am happy they’re coming.

    • I don’t see anyone here complaining– all the comments above indicate approval. Stating that Ben’s is overrated (can anyone really disagree with that?) doesn’t mean we don’t want it here, even if it’s not deserving of the extraordinary hype.

  • Ben’s is good for what it is – a cheap place that serves tasty artery clogging food at all hours of the day. I’d be disappointed if they tried to beyond that concept.

I live around the corner from the U Street Ben’s and stop in at 2am once every few months. A shake and a chili half-smoke with cheese right before bed always hits the spot ;-)

Ben’s has also sobered up plenty of idiots before they made the drive back to MD or VA. For that, we should be thankful!
