PoP Preview: Mad Momos Opening in Columbia Heights on Dec. 11th

3605 14th St, NW

Back in late August we checked on the progress at Mad Momos coming to 3605 14th St, NW. It was looking very promising. Remember when it used to look like this? You can also see the amount of work that was done here. Now the space will make your jaw drop:

Their website says:

mad momos is a restaurant, beer deck and lounge in the heart of Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. We offer New American and crossover cuisine with a focus on hand-crafted momos.

WHAT’S A MOMO?
A momo is a tasty dumpling native to the Himalayan region. Almost all cultures have some variation of a momo – a savory or sweet stuffing wrapped in a sheet of pasta. Our unique artisanal momos are made on premise. We offer a fun, new, “mad” twist on the traditional momo with creative fillings, pasta and our dipping sauces complement each momo meal. Our pasta is made daily from scratch and our meats are all house-ground.

COME ENJOY OUR SPACE
Guests can enjoy a variety of spaces at mad momos. The first level contains a full-service bar and main dining area that extends onto an outdoor terrace with sidewalk seating. The second level features more dining, a charming treetop patio, vaulted ceiling lounge and second bar. Large windows, folding doors and skylights bring in lots of natural light. Exposed brick walls will feature rotating artwork from local artists as well as several green panels created by local permaculturists.

CRAFT BEER ENTHUSIASTS TAKE NOTE
Grab some friends or meet new ones while you enjoy a beer on our rooftop deck with picnic tables. It’s the perfect spot to savor one of 16 thoughtfully selected beers on tap and in bottles. Stop by now to try our winter selections.

  • WOW that’s incredible!

  • This place looks great! Can’t wait to try it out :)

  • I love the fact that this is so close to me! I suspect my bank balance won’t. Can’t wait to try it.

  • They should serve Flaming Moes there.

  • The number of bars and restaurants opening that are stumbling distance from my front door make me very, very happy.

    • Agreed! I just moved to the area a few months ago and the more I venture out, the more I LOVE my neighbourhood. I’ve been walking by this place wondering when it was opening… Can’t wait til next week! :)

  • I love the momos from Himalayan Heritage in Adams Morgan. There’s not anything about this menu that screams “Himalayan” and only about a quarter of the menu are the dumplings. But it still sounds good!

    • Hi Peachy,
Thank you for the comment. mad momos is not a restaurant specializing in Himalayan cuisine. momos (our namesake) is also the name for Himalayan dumplings and we are excited to serve Himalayan style momos as well as other specialties of dumplings. We have always maintained that we are serving New American and crossover cuisine.
      Hope to meet you,
      mad momos

  • I wonder if they’ll be serving yak anytime soon.

  • This whole “I banked my real estate investment on that shady stretch of 14th street developing” may end up working out after all. This place looks amazing and I’m excited about Lyman’s as well. So much potential along this strip.

  • mmmm Momos!! I love’em – had them in Khatmandu and Pokhara – can’t wait to try their “mad” version. YUMMY!!!

  • Allison

    Looks great!

Now if only more cool places like this would come to Southwest… get the real estate while it’s cheap, neato restaurants!

  • The momos are made “on premise.” lol

  • For anyone else trying to picture where exactly 3605 14th St NW would be: It’s 14th between Spring and Perry.

  • Looks awesome! YAK!

  • For a smaller joint, their beer list is pretty impressive. As for their food menu, I wish they would have focused more on what makes them uniqe, namely the momos, which sound awesome! They don’t need to be serving pulled chicken sandwiches and mussels like so many other bars in the area when they have such a great and unique thing going for them. Maybe they will figure this out sooner rather than later.

    • Hi Eric,

Thank you for appreciating the beer list. I hope you come and enjoy several sips and please wait till the beer deck, sidewalk cafe and tree top patio open in the spring or maybe a warm winter day.

Along with the traditional momos we have several varieties of momos that are very unique. We have also put a mad momos spin on all the other dishes and are excited for you to try them out. Hope you enjoy.

      Thank you,
      mad momos

  • Beer and dumplings. Yes and yes.

  • I want that fabulous yellow sectional!

  • these momos sound similar to manti…which is not a bad thing!

  • Menu looks great, beers look great, space looks great– if the service is good, I’ll be here on the regular! Looking forward to trying this place out really soon.

  • I’m puzzled as to why the drinks menu lists five cocktails but provides descriptions for none of them.

    Otherwise, looks good.

  • cant wait to be there, heard good things already:) Good luck!

  • Place looks amazing!!

  • Looks excellent! I will be there.

  • I am a 30-second walk from this place, literally, and I’m so excited that this vacant space has been renovated so nicely! Best of luck; we’ll be there often, I’m sure.

  • This place looks amazing. To think that only a few short months ago, this was the site of some questionable activity. These guys are some hardworking pioneers and deserving of our business. I’m happy that they are in my neighborhood!

  • Simply incredible. A model for other restauranteurs in terms of both attention to detail and creativity. So nice to see not-another-generic-formula-space, love the eclectic and fun design. Hopefully the food matches the decor!

  • Place looks like what I have been waiting for to come to the neighborhood for a while. I hope they keep the beers rotating so they get new one frequently, and maybe expand their selection, but it looks great for launch. Excited to try it soon.

  • Place looks great.I wouldn’t exactly call them pioneers but good to have another addition to the neighborhood.

    • Hi BFBS, Thank you for your kind words. Please help us improve our neighborhood.

Hi Chic, There have been many pioneers before and hope many more will join on this amazing strip of 14th Street.

We are very excited to be here since we are long term residents of the area. We wanted to set up our first business in Columbia Heights because we love the diversity of our area, we are happy to be surrounded by different types of unique small businesses and most importantly we believe in our neighborhood.

  • wow the place looks great, the menu is making my mouth water and the beer list is awesome. I cannot wait.

  • This looks amazing! I cannot wait!

  • Really nice place with excellent social justice cred (their bottom line is “3P”–not just profit, but also people and planet). Two small suggestions: (1) turn the music volume way down, or at least get a good sound track. My friends and I had to shout to be heard over boring top 40 pop drek. (2) Bring the steamed momos in the steamer basket; they dry out too quickly when served on an open plate. Still, highly recommended!
