Last week I posted From 100% Canadian Chicken* to 100% Plant-Based about a Fruitive coming to the former Chickery space in Dupont Circle. But our tipster was a couple of storefronts off!! The Fruitive is coming two storefronts north closer to the circle on the same side of the street – can’t remember who had that spot – you guys? Anyway, silver lining is that I learned WHO IS taking over the old Chickery space – a HipCityVeg. So big score for plant-based eaters living/working in Dupont.

712 7th Street, NW

HipCityVeg openedtheir first D.C. location in Chinatown back in 2016. Any fans? You can check out their menu here.

Updates as both get closer to opening.

Ed. Note: This puts us well past 90 for closures this year.

Thanks to Peter for the heads up. Ruth’s Chris website says:

“724 9th Street, NW, Washington D.C., DC 20001

Location Closed Ruth’s Chris Steak House on 9th Street near the Convention Center is now closed. Our Dupont Circle location, and all other Virginia and Maryland steak houses remain open to serve you. Additionally, we will be opening a new Washington, D.C. location on L Street in 2019.

Updates when we learn who takes over the 9th Street spot and when the L Street location gets closer to opening.

The Chickery (previously home to Black and Orange/Rogue States burger spot) closed back in February. Thanks to Eric for sending an update on who’s taking over the space – Fruitive. You can see their menu here. Anyone ever check out their CityCenter location? Stand by for a Dupont opening date.

*I have no idea where The Chickery’s chickens came from but the company is from Toronto and when the opportunity for alliteration comes my way, I strike.

What does it all mean? Let me tell you what it all means. Nothing. It means nothing. In the wise words of Gorgias:

“Nothing exists; Even if something exists, nothing can be known about it; and Even if something can be known about it, knowledge about it can’t be communicated to others. Even if it can be communicated, it cannot be understood.”

Thanks to Will for sending:

“Starbucks Dupont south is closing on December 30th.”

What the hell – first one of the many Comfort One closes and now one of the many Starbucks is closing. Dark days in Dupont indeed.

Now hold on just a second – a liquor license application has just been applied for a Tokyo Pearl at 1301 Connecticut Avenue, NW: (more…)

A couple of weeks ago, many of us, were devastated to learn that Soapstone Market would be closing at the end of the year. Someone in the comments noted that the space had already been leased. And kudos to you for that scuttlebutt sir/madam because leased it is!

From an email:

“Uptown Market is thrilled to bring our neighborhood market concept to Van Ness in spring 2019. You’ll find locally sourced and thoughtfully curated offerings like our fresh seafood market, butcher shop, artisan creamery, coffee bar and more. We look forward to meeting you and serving the Van Ness neighborhood, we hope you’ll come to shop and stay awhile.

Uptown Market is brought to you by the folks behind Bethesda’s popular neighborhood markets Butchers Alley and Pescadeli.”

STAY TUNED.

I’ve been getting tons of inquiries asking for updates on the coming Columbia Heights Wawa. I’m told that building permits have finally been issued and “hard construction” begins after the holidays. If all goes according to plan they should be open by May 1st.

And thanks to Eric Kmetz for passing on word about the Georgetown Wawa: (more…)
