Thanks to a reader for passing on from Car2Go:

“As Winter Storm Jonas approaches the DC/Arlington area, local leaders have declared a state of emergency. In the interest of the safety of our members and employees, we will temporarily suspend our services in DC and Arlington at 9pm EST this evening indefinitely until the severity of the storm has passed.

We will immediately update you when our service resumes in the DC/Arlington area. For up-to-date information please visit http://washingtondc.car2go.com/.”

Ed. Note: No worries I’m sure Uber will be reasonably priced. Wait a minute… Drink/play local and stay off the roads if possible!!

This is stupid. Not even going to be snowing until at least noon tomorrow.

They are a private company, not a public service provider. I suspect that they have looked at their data on revenue and on insurance liability and thought about this a little bit and arrived at a decision that makes business sense to them. They are free to suspend service whenever they want, and you are free to cancel your membership whenever you want.

Wow, intense reaction to my personal opinion about their level of service.

Suspending tonight also allows them to remove any vehicles from snow emergency routes in advance of the storm.

          Ahh, good point.

          Fair point.

I’d imagine that they need the overnight hours to move any cars that are on snow emergency routes before they get towed on Friday morning at 9:30am when the snow emergency goes into effect. Shutting down at 9:00pm tonight lets them make sure all the little car2gos are snug and secure on roads they’re allowed to be on before the blizzard hits. Keep in mind, blizzards are scary for little car2gos – they can get buried in a snowdrift pretty easily!

are they going to manually move all their cars parked on snow emergency routes too?

As opposed to…? Activating the self-drive feature and remote-controlling the cars to non-emergency-route spots?
