“Dear PoPville,
I think I had an encounter (Thursday) with “coffee guy,” the one who approaches women pretending to be from somewhere else, asks about coffee places, then tries to pressure you into a coffee date.
I was leaving my office and he approached me at the intersection of 10th and G NW. He asked me where Tatte was, because I “look like the kind of person with the swagger to go there.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Just wanted to alert everyone to the massive ice chunks hanging several inches over the edge of the apartment building above Safeway on Georgia Avenue in Petworth. I called 311 and told the apartment building front desk but there’s no warning or anything right now.” (more…)

From DC Water:
“February 5, 2026
Overnight CCTV inspection of the Potomac Interceptor revealed the blockage inside the collapsed sewer line is far more significant, showing a large rock dam stretching approximately 30 feet downstream of the original failure. The unexpected discovery exposed the severity of the obstruction and prompted an immediate reassessment that will extend the timeline for cleaning and repairs.
It’s expected to take an estimated 4-6 weeks of additional time to get a system in place that will add more, larger bypass pumps in a new location and stabilize the site for heavy machinery to safely begin removing the large rocks and boulders inside the sewer line. While the existing bypass system has mostly contained overflows, more pumps are needed to further reduce the remaining flow getting through the pipe. A bulkhead will then be installed upstream of the failure to block the pipe and limit the wastewater reaching the collapse site.
A section of the sewer line collapsed January 19, along Clara Barton Parkway and the 495 interchange and the C & O Canal National Historical Park, causing an estimated 40 million gallons a day of wastewater to escape and enter the Potomac River. (more…)

“This Sunday, with the celebration of Super Bowl LX, the District encourages everyone to find a safe way home. Nationally, nearly half of all fatal crashes on Super Bowl Sunday involve alcohol. Each year, more than 13,000 people are killed in drunk-driving crashes nationwide, making impaired driving one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities in the U.S. These figures are why safety organizations continue to push a clear, consistent message on game day: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk. “Metro will replace trains with shuttle buses between Pentagon City and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport over 10 select weekends from February through June. Crystal City will be closed to build a second entrance at the station as part of Arlington County’s Crystal City Sector plan. The new entrance will accommodate growing ridership at the station, support new development in the area, and play a key role in a broader effort to make Crystal City a walkable community.
On three of those 10 weekends, (more…)

This is, understandably, a new perennial question:
“Dear PoPville,
I made an interesting observation a few weeks ago while commuting home from work. I was stopped in traffic at the top of 395 where the tunnel ends and I noticed the large storage door open next to the northbound lanes. Just inside the door sits a very large statue of a lion. It seemed like a very surprising thing to be stored in there. I’d be interested to know if anyone has the backstory on why it’s in there and where it came from. Feel like a weird DC secret.”

From the National Zoo:
“For the first time in nearly 25 years, elephant care staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) are celebrating the birth of an Asian elephant—an endangered species. The female calf was born overnight Feb. 2 at 1:15 a.m. to 12-year-old mother Nhi Linh and 44-year-old father Spike. The pair bred in April 2024 following a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). Asian elephant pregnancies last 18 to 22 months on average; Nhi Linh’s pregnancy was 21 months. (more…)
