Not sure if anyone else has experienced in Dupont, but our apartment building (which just recently replaced the door) was broken into last night (Tuesday) between 11:10 and 11:22pm, and a thief not only made off with a bunch of packages across both hallways and a downstairs unit, but cut through bolted bikes in the building. I guess it’s a good PSA more than anything…
Last Thursday I was one of several people robbed at the Shell Station at 12th and Otis St NE in Brookland. I unlocked my car to switch credit cards, since the one I was planning on using was not able to be read. Unbeknownst to me, a kid had snuck around my passenger side and opened the door, such that it was not able to be locked again. When I finished pumping gas and went to get in, the kid was inside my car, with my purse in his hands, rifling through other things in the car to take. In addition to my purse, he got my car/house keys, iPhone and my wallet with my ID containing my address. I stupidly chased the kid but he got into a waiting black, Mercedes crossover with MD temp tags and they sped north on 12th St NE. About 10 minutes after the theft, I started getting fraud calls to my Apple watch from the Walmart on Riggs Road. They were able to make about $4000 in purchases between all of my cards in my wallet. You may want to warn your readers about this very dangerous phenomenon and tell them to NEVER put these types of batteries in the trash or recycling! They can often now be used in a number of products, including, sadly, greeting cards!”

I had an experience at the Intown U-Haul location that I think is relevant to other DMV residents. Earlier today (Sunday), I picked up a small van at 5:30pm for a 7:30pm drop-off and parked my car in one of the customer parking spaces at the entrance to the pick-up / drop-off depot. I arrived at 7:15pm to drop-off the U-Haul and pick up my car only to find my car blocked in by another U-Haul. (more…)
Now that metro is getting back to good…

“As part of Metro’s investment in safety and reliability, construction will begin in July on the first of two major capital projects on the Red Line that will upgrade the tunnel ventilation system and repair deteriorating platform canopies. The work is expected to cause significant impacts for customers, with around-the-clock single tracking and station closures.
“It is important that we continue with this safety critical work so that we are ready and able to resume normal operations as the region reopens,” said Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld. “We will be working around the clock, seven-days a week, to maximize efficiencies and allow us to get the work done more quickly.”
Beginning Saturday, July 17, and continuing through Sunday, August 29, Metro and its contractor will install new, more powerful fans in the tunnels between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park as part of a pilot project to improve tunnel safety in the event of a smoke or fire emergency. (more…)

A guy who has been doing some pretty creepy stuff in the north dupont and kalorama area the last few days. It’s getting a lot of discussion on nextdoor and my building listserv. Just want to make sure people are aware because it’s pretty frightening to me.
There’s a guy who has been spotted following people (mostly women) around the neighborhood last night and this morning. Spotted around Dolcezza on Connecticut, near the Spanish Steps, near 18th and S, and on the 2100 block of S Street. (more…)
