I think it’s a toss up. You?

Brutal. From a Gallup news report:

Americans are much more likely to oppose (64%) than to favor (29%) making Washington, D.C., a separate state. These results are consistent with past polling on the topic by other firms, which also found majorities opposed to the idea.

Although D.C. residents want their city to become the 51st state, their fellow Americans disagree. In fact, Americans have consistently opposed D.C. statehood in polling over the past three decades. The issue has become politicized, given that adding D.C. as a state would practically guarantee increased Democratic representation in Congress. As such, a D.C. statehood proposal is unlikely to pass unless there were a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, a filibuster-proof Democratic majority in the Senate and a Democratic president.”

The Washington Post reports:

“In a strongly worded opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit condemned the roadblocks, which police used last summer in the city’s Trinidad neighborhood in Northeast Washington. The checkpoints, which have not been used in about a year, were a response to a spate of shootings, including a triple homicide.”

Council Member Mendelson sent out a press release:

“I am pleased with the U.S. Court of Appeals decision reversing a lower court’s approval of the controversial roadblocks. It is unfortunate that the District’s Attorney General was so wrong to insist that the roadblocks were constitutional. However, today’s decision is no surprise given that the DC Court of Appeals came to the same conclusion regarding roadblocks – ironically, also in Trinidad – in 1991.

All of us want to reduce crime – there is too much of it despite the recent drop in numbers. But the District government should pursue strategies that are proven to work. Roadblocks sound good – they’re a “get tough” approach – but they are controversial and often illegal. There are much more effective strategies, as Police Chief Cathy Lanier has shown, that have the community’s support and reduce crime.

Today’s decision is a triumph over rhetoric.”

I’m curious to know how you guys feel about this issue.

Today’s FQOTD is something I’ve been curious about. By no means do I think the PoP readership is representative of all DC but we are a much more diverse group than most people realize. Anyway, folks say that DC is a very transient town. Then folks who have lived here a long time or all their life get pretty pissed off. So, I am just curious about your particular situations. I know it’s impossible to predict the future but I’m wondering how many folks plan on staying in DC for the longterm or eventually plan on moving somewhere else?

We briefly touched on Pasta Mia when discussing the best Italian restaurants in DC. But for some reason Pasta Mia stirs some really strong emotions. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the place without a big line on the weekends. Yet almost everyone I speak with hates it. If everyone hates it then why are there always lines? They have to be doing something right. Right?

So I took the Bolt Bus from NYC to DC today. It was pretty awesome. Tickets day of only cost $20. And there was wifi (although it was a little spotty at times). But my question is why would the driver take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway back to DC instead of 495? We hit killer traffic on the BWP. I feel like 66 there is always crazy traffic on the BWP. So when traveling from north to south would you take 495 or the BWP?

Sorry for the terrible cell phone photo but this was way too cool of a sight not to post (they gave me permission to take the photo). So these folks had set up tiki torches and brought a tv and comfortable chairs on their front lawn to watch the olympics. It really was a great sign. So are you guys super psyched about the olympics? I have to be honest, it really doesn’t do much for me. Maybe if they showed my favorite Summer olympics sport (ping pong) I’d feel differently. If you are excited what are your favorite sports to watch?
