Last week I begged Dacha to hurry up. If you will it, it is no dream.

From a press release:

“Team Dacha is excited to announce the much anticipated reopening of Shaw’s own, expanded and improved, Dacha Beer Garden this coming Thursday, March 19th at 4:00 pm!

We gutted the China Express building next door and installed new bathrooms and a new kitchen on the 1st floor. The plan to build an extension to the main historic structure that will expand the restaurant and bar spaces to the 2nd and 3rd floors is still active. We will continue working with our neighbors and the Historic Preservation Review Board to approve the plans and move forward.

What to expect at the opening:

First 50 guests will receive beautiful, complimentary Dacha t-shirts.
– The same great casual set-up with several major improvements.
– Brand new sparkling bathrooms. Porta potties no more!
– Expanded beer menu, with the addition of Weihenstephaner Pale Ale and All Day IPA from Founders Brewing Company.
– Expanded grounds with more canopy coverage and larger guest areas.

The Happy Hour will remain, Monday through Thursday, lasting from 3pm to 7pm including $5 singles and $10 boots of select drafts.

What to expect in the next few weeks:

– Full kitchen slated to open in April.
– Expanded menu to start in April.
Dacha Market and Coffee will start operating from the former China Express carry out store front in April. The market will feature self-serve coffee, pastry, sandwiches, occasional gourmet groceries, juices, milk, fresh bread, cold cuts and more. In the morning the market will greet guests with freshly brewed coffee, pastries and a selection of breakfast sandwiches. Our upcoming online ordering system will allow guests to order their lunch and dinner then pick it up at Dacha Market and Coffee.

Thanks again for your continued support of Dacha Beer Garden. We cannot wait to welcome you and your loved ones at the garden this coming Thursday!

Dacha Beer Garden is a pleasant, green neighborhood epicenter that has been warmly received and endorsed by the community. Dacha serves a carefully curated selection of world-class German, Belgian and American beers, a variety of meads, ciders and wines – all accompanied by German and Eastern European inspired menu. The open-air format, comfortable seating, and convenient location make Dacha an easy choice, while affordable prices offer a great dinner/lunch alternative to a restaurant or a take out.

We’re changing the world, one beer at a time.”

Big (lower) Barracks Row news from Washington Business Journal:

“Gaunoux, who has partnered with Mark Brody and Chris Chambers (of H Street NE’s Biergarten Haus) on this project, described the beer garden as a “one-story structure with a bar and some food,” and perhaps live music. He expects to break ground next week.”

We first heard about this project back in November 2010. It’s located on lower Barracks Row past the bridge towards Navy Yard. Updates as construction progresses.

and next door to Dancing Crab, the coming soon Bread & Salt is now hiring:

Their facebook page says:

“In bread, life is sustained; in salt, it is preserved. People have recognized this since ancient times, when women in the fertile crescent gathered around the village oven, baking their families’ daily loaves, simmering clay pots full of the fruits of the local harvest, and adding pinches of precious salt. The Arabic word “aish” means both “life” and “bread.” Roman soldiers were judged by whether they were “worth their salt.”

Over the centuries, bread 7 salt became synonymous with hospitality and communality. In many cultures bread & salt are still offered at housewarmings, representing hope that the newcomer’s pantry will always be full. In Russian, visitors to a home traditionally exclaim “Khleb da sol!” meaning bread & salt. In Mediterranean cultures, bread & salt are shared to seal agreements_more powerful than any written contract.

It is in this spirit we created Bread & Salt, A Neighborhood Eatinghouse. Here hospitality still revolves around the oven, from which emerge rustic loaves, flatbreads, and lay pots full of slow-cooked flavors. These are healthful, hearty foods to be shared by families and friends, meant not to be eaten on the run, but to be enjoyed together, either in our home, or in yours. the concept may be as ancient as bread and salt, but the setting is as contemporary as todays whole-grain loaf and pinch of Mediterranean sea salt.”

Buildout nearing completion, nice marble floors:

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what’s up with outdoor bar space lately? On Friday evening, I stopped by Etto, Rebellion and Bar Charley, and all had closed their patios by midnight. Is this a new law, or something just recently enforced?”

This is has always been the law. When Bars/Restaurants apply for liquor licenses hours are always listed on the placard for indoor space and outdoor space. Outdoor space (except for some roof decks) almost always close by midnight on the weekends (11pm during the week) to be considerate to neighbors who live nearby. Can anyone think of a patio that has hours later than midnight?

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“There was some discussion a while back about Nellie’s rooftop and new regulations that were passed. I received an email from Nellie’s today that shows quite a bit of progress has been made on a new structure and their Facebook page states, “Time for a facelift! We’re getting a fancy new retractable roof to replace our tent, and wanted to share our progress with you. But have no fear, our roof is still open for drinks in the meantime, and we’ve still got our night time DJ’s rockin’ up there!”

From an email:

“Little Miss Whiskey’s gorgeous patio is now open with a second level. The fountains are on, the honeysuckle is growing, and our black bamboo is about to shoot this season’s growth 30 feet out of the ground. The first level of the patio is also now outfitted with large gas heaters for colder weather.

Patrons may reserve both levels of the patio or just the second for private events. Both levels come with use of our large propane grill, perfect for urban grilling any weekend or evening to which DC residents don’t have access in their apartments/homes.

Little Miss Whiskey’s is located at 1104 H Street NE, open 7 days a week, and there is never a cover.”
