A reader reports about 7:15pm:

“Train evacuated at Shaw, lots of people coughing. Possibly a pepper spray prank by teens seen running away”

Update from an eyewitness:

“I was on the train car that got pepper sprayed tonight. It wasn’t exactly a prank. There were a group of teenagers on the train (I was sitting behind them) and another individual who got into a verbal fight and were taunting and threatening back and forth. The individual went to get off the train at the Shaw stop and someone sprayed pepper spray. I believe the individual sprayed it in the direction of the teens. Then the teens ran off the train after her. Unfortunately, the pepper spray remained in the air and quickly spread throughout the car. Everyone moved toward the ends of the car (the incident had taken place by the middle doors), but the doors had just closed before most people realized what had happened. Luckily, the operator opened the doors and everyone ran off. She then realized something was going on and subsequently, they unloaded the entire train and eventually put it out of service.”

From WMATA:

“Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of March 13-15 with service adjustments on three of six rail lines.

This weekend, Red, Orange and Yellow line trains will operate at regular intervals (Yellow to/from Mt Vernon Sq only). Green Line trains will run every 16 minutes.

Blue Line trains will operate normally between Franconia-Springfield and Stadium-Armory, and Silver Line trains will operate normally between Wiehle-Reston East and Stadium-Armory. Riders traveling to or from five stations at the far eastern end of the Blue/Silver lines should allow additional time.

On Saturday, March 14, the Metrorail system will open two hours early — at 5 a.m. — for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.”

Today’s question comes from the forum:

“Close to One Metro Line vs. Kinda Close to Two?

It’s time to play a game of “Would You Rather!”

Would you rather live really close (say within 3 blocks) of a single metro station, or kinda close to two different lines — say about a 12 minute walk to one and a 15 minute walk to the other? I currently live over in South Bloomingdale and therefore use the NoMa and Shaw stops, but sometimes that 12 minute walk can be fairly daunting in harsh weather. I would love to hear what y’all think!”

I’d also be curious to know – if you currently commute by metro – how long does it take you to walk from your house to the metro?

From WMATA:

“The following statement was issued today by Metro Board Chairman Mort Downey:

“Today the WMATA Board voted to forego any fare increases or substantial cuts in bus or rail service as we move forward with the adoption of a balanced budget. While the final budget vote will come in the spring, the Board’s action today reflects a continued commitment to further reduce administrative costs and reprogram money from non-safety programs, and signals continued support from our jurisdictional funding partners to help balance the budget and continue our standing fare and service policies.

“The Board’s search for a new General Manager and Chief Executive Officer is ongoing, as we want to ensure that we identify a candidate with the combination of leadership, transportation, financial and management skills required to move WMATA forward. We appreciate Jack Requa’s outstanding leadership as interim General Manager, which will continue until the search has concluded.”

antiharassment

From WMATA:

“Metro’s new anti-sexual harassment PSA is now on display across the Metro system. The ads mark the second phase of the campaign, which is designed to raise awareness that harassment of fellow riders is not tolerated on Metro.

“It is important to us that Metro be a safe space for our customers,” said Metro Transit Police Chief, Ronald Pavlik. “People have the right to travel without being harassed or intimidated by anyone, and we want to put would-be perpetrators on notice that we will pursue any allegation that is brought to our attention.”

The ads feature hands representing different races and genders to illustrate that harassment is not exclusive to any one group or sex. The concept was developed in collaboration with advocacy groups Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) and Stop Street Harassment, who have worked closely with Metro on this issue.

“Harassment and assault on the Metro is never okay,” said Zosia Sztykowski, Co-Executive Director at Collective Action for Safe Spaces. “Raising awareness about it and about the resources available to people who experience it is an important part of creating a Metro system that’s safe and welcoming for everyone.”

Last year, reports of harassment on Metro declined 13 percent, as compared to 2013.

Any customer who is harassed, threatened or assaulted is urged to report it to Transit Police immediately:
