From an email:
“Restaurateur Asad Sheikh is expanding his latest venture Butter Chicken Company, a fast casual concept, to the H Street NE corridor. Located at 500 H Street NE, this outpost solely dedicated to India’s iconic dish Butter Chicken, opens Tuesday, February 18th. Similar to the downtown DC location, only 300 servings are prepared per day, however the H Street NE restaurant will be open all day long, with 100 servings prepared for lunch and another 200 for dinner. Sheikh previously opened award winning restaurants in Northern Virginia (Curry Mantra London Curry House and 1947), before deciding to focus on Washington, DC. Sheikh opened two locations of Bombay Street Food in Columbia Heights and Capitol Hill in 2019, inspired by the bright and vibrant street food flavors he grew up eating in Bombay. He debuted the original Butter Chicken Company this past fall in downtown DC. (more…)

Dagger. Time ran out on Bagels and Baguettes sooner than we thought. Hopefully they are able to find a new, better space soon.

“Dear PoPville,
So I wanted to know a good place for a birthday lunch/brunch kinda thing. I really like the areas around U Street/Logan Circle, Adams Morgan, and Eastern Market/Capitol Hill. The most important thing location-wise is that it’s metro accessible since that’s how many of my friends will be getting there. Any type of food is good. The place would preferably be not too expensive since we are students and on a budget.”

Thanks to Dylan for sending. Slapfish opened in the former Capriotti’s space in May of 2019. (more…)

lower level 1875 I Street, NW
Back in early December we broke the news that the International Square Food Court would be closing (RIP Stoupsy’s foreva.) Thanks to a reader for passing on some plans for what’s coming via Bisnow:
“The food court inside International Square and street-level restaurant Prequel both closed last month. Tishman Speyer’s email to tenants said it plans to add a food hall to the building’s street level with about 20 carefully curated vendors and a bar. The owner also plans to add two new full-service restaurants and a boutique grocer to the street level, plus an additional restaurant to the lower level, the email said.”
I’ve already heard one rumor of a Whole Foods… STAY TUNED.

901 New York Avenue, NW
“Dear PoPville,
Capitol Hill readers may remember our beloved breakfast haunt, Bagels & Baguettes, on the corner of 3rd and Mass NE.
Helen, the owner, is really struggling in her new location (901 New York Ave NW), and if things don’t go well, she’ll be gone within the year. The windows are dark, and the landlord/zoning won’t let her do sidewalk signage. She’s also right next to a Starbucks (which cannot compare to her fresh baked bagels and croissants!).
Anything readers can do to help get the word out to her new City Center neighborhood would be appreciated. Helen is the mom of two young teens and really needs the boost!”
