“Dear PoP,

I’m a producer for the DC Chapter of a national art project called MORTIFIED. We’re gearing up for our next show (November 10) and are currently looking for submissions. I was hoping you could help us get the word out. Details below:

Mortified is a comic excavation of adolescent writing, art and media.
Hailed a “cultural phenomenon” by Newsweek, Mortified is a comic
excavation of the strange and extraordinary things we created as kids.
Witness adults sharing their own adolescent journals, letters, poems,
lyrics, home movies, stories and more!

The Washington, D.C. chapter is looking for new material … that’s right … you know you wrote
some lame ass stuff in school. So did the people behind Mortified.
And they want you to join them. Dust off that diary! Whip out that
Trapper Keeper! Mortified DC is actively looking for new participants to
join the fun. If you or someone you know would like to read aloud
utterly embarrassing childhood relics in front of total strangers …
we’d LOVE to hear from you. Open to anyone from actors to
accountants. Must be 21+.

WHAT: MORTIFIED – WASHINGTON DC AREA

After the jump – tonight’s fundraiser happy hour. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I am a volunteer for the Washington, DC chapter of the Sierra Club. On August 18th at 6:00 p.m., the chapter will be holding a happy hour for streetcar supporters to celebrate recent victories (funding approved by DC Council and overhead wires legislation passed) and to discuss what next steps should be taken in our campaign to make streetcars a viable transportation for option for as many residents of the Washington, DC metro region as possible. The happy hour will take place at SOVA, located at 1359 H Street NE, an espresso and wine bar located along the route of the proposed H st.–Benning Rd. NE line.”

If you have a happy hour or event you’d like publicized in the 5pm post please send an email to princeofpetworth(at) gmail (dot) com with 5pm post in the title of the email.

I’ve scheduled the next PoP Happy Hour for Wed. Aug. 11th from 6:30pm – 10:30pm. Here’s what I’m thinking: I figure we can have parents with little kids swing by around 6:30 – 7:30pm and then properly defile ourselves from 8 on? I’ll have new PoP t-shirts on hand for people I owe and for those that want to purchase to some.

So here are the details – it’ll be at Duffy’s (a PoP advertiser) located right behind the 9:30 Club on Vermont Ave. Here are the specials:

$10 Pitchers of Miller lite
$2 Tall Boy PBR | High Life | Bud
$4 20oz Drafts of Guinness | Kilkenny | Yuengling | Sam’s | Sam’s Summer
$16 Pitchers of Yuengling | Sam’s | Sam’s Summer
1/2 Price Wings

See ya Wed. the 11th!

Gori Cafe is located at 1113 V Street, NW. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before but after paying $8 for a drink last night I had to share this happy hour with you again. It may not be the coolest place in the city but I’m really digging this deal. Think it’s big enough to host the next PoP happy hour (to welcome spring and plan the next PoP clean up)?

One of the owners, Mike Wilkinson, tells me that Pete’s “is introducing a Happy Hour from 3:30 to 6:30, seven days a week. Slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza and a pint of beer for $5.” Holy cow that is awesome. Although it seems like people are just trying to torture me knowing that I work until 6pm. Ah, but it’s seven days a week, so you now know where you can catch me on Sundays. For those who haven’t been there yet Pete’s is located right above the Columbia Heights metro on the western exit.
