“Dear PoPville,

With the rise of fast casual and expanded carry out options, what’s the protocol on tipping? I notice most fast casual restaurants preset the payment system with tipping options (none, 15%, 20%, etc). Is there an expectation for tips for fast casual? What if they make you a coffee or a cocktail? Then what if you order carry out; do the same rules apply? I’m so confused!”

“Dear PoPville,

Just heard from one of the servers that Maison Kayser is closing their two DC locations at the end of next week. I think they have a lot of fans out there so I wanted to spread the word so folks might stop by before they close their doors! they were expensive but I thought their bread/pastries were pretty top notch.” (more…)

Occupying a 2200-square foot, 20-seat space, the new fast-casual concept will explore the rich tradition of Asian street food, focusing on styles of barbecue from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, and Burma, as well as sushi, all served on sticks. Myint also owns Burmese dining staple Mandalay in Silver Spring, Md. alongside three generations of family, and has a decades-long history owning, operating, and consulting restaurants in the DMV. He’ll work with longtime friend and business partner Kunakorn Sangkhankaw on developing the menu at Sticx as well. (more…)

Thanks to Bree for sending: “Le Pain Quotidien is closing on 4th and Mass. In the words of a colleague, “Maybe its because it takes 15 minutes for them to make a piece of toast. And because they also charge $15 for said piece of toast.”
