“We are now wrapping up week four since so much of the world has changed, and our market team and farmers and producers continue to adapt every day. Earlier this week, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued new orders requiring the implementation of social distancing protocols at retail food sellers, including grocery stores and farmers markets. We have applied for waivers for each of our DC markets and are pleased to announce that Monroe Street, H Street NE, Columbia Heights, and Dupont have all been approved to operate this weekend! We will continue to work closely with the Mayor’s office to ensure that our farmers markets can be in compliance with the new regulations. Stay tuned for additional announcements on social media and our website.

“Today, to protect the District’s food supply chain and the District’s frontline food workers during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued Mayor’s Order 2020-058.
MO 2020-58 Social Distancing Protocols Required for Food Sellers (PDF)

“Dear PoPville,
In light of all the closings in DC, I haven’t been able to find much out about DC farmers markets, and especially the compost drop-off sites run by the DC government. I understand packed farmers markets aren’t the best idea during this time, but I hope the compost sites wouldn’t have to close too. Does anyone know the status of these services?”

However, we urge you to stay home if you are sick. “FRESHFARM needs your help! We have an important update to share about the FRESHFARM Dupont Circle Farmers Market. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is exploring the creation of a north-south protected bike lane to connect the Dupont Circle neighborhood with Foggy Bottom and the National Mall. This week, the Dupont Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 2B) made a motion to recommend that the protected bike lane be constructed along 20th Street NW, which would travel directly through the market. While FRESHFARM strongly supports more protected bike lanes throughout the city, we are very concerned about the impacts the proposed bike lane will have on market operations. A protected bike lane along 20th Street could reduce the footprint of the Dupont Circle Farmers Market by as much as 60% and create serious safety hazards for shoppers, farmers and producers, as well as cyclists. “In honor of Earth Month, the Department of Public Works (DPW) is pleased to announce the reopening of food waste drop-off’s throughout the city, and an array of other services. On Earth Day weekend (April 21-22), DPW will be giving away kitchen caddies to the first 50 participants at each open drop-off location to help residents compost their food waste.
Mayor Bowser kicked off DPW’s first citywide Food Waste Drop-Off program on Earth Day 2017. Through the free service, residents are able to drop-off food waste at designated farmers markets in all eight city wards. The food waste collected at these drop-off locations is composted locally at District community composting sites and at the Prince George’s County Organics Compost facility.
As of April 1, the Food Waste Drop-Off program had collected nearly 150,000 pounds of organics from more than 20,000 participants in all eight wards over the last year. (more…)

Somehow controversial, the Cleveland Park farmers market is a go!!! [Ed. Note: Service lane, you’re next!!!]
The Cleveland Park Business Association shares the good news:
“We are very happy to announce the long-awaited launch of the Cleveland Park Farmers Market! Permit applications have been submitted and we anticipate opening on Saturday, June 3. The Farmers Market will operate outdoors every Saturday morning from 8:30 AM- 12:30 PM, in the heart of the Cleveland Park on the West Side Sidewalk of Connecticut Avenue between Newark Street and the Uptown Theater.
This year’s launch of the Farmers Market is in direct response to a survey conducted in the Community. We were delighted to learn from the survey that an overwhelming 88% of respondents supported the Farmers Market and 80% of respondents intend to shop at the neighborhood businesses when they came to the Farmers Market. “We are hoping that the Farmers Market will remind and encourage the community to shop at and support their local bricks and mortar businesses all week. ” says Susan Lihn, owner of Wake Up Little Suzie, and CPBA’s Board Co-Chair.
