“Dear PoP,

I love reading your blog and thought you might be a good person to ask about what is happening at the former Zenebech Injera Ethiopian restaurant on T between 6th and 7th NW, a few doors down from the Howard Theatre. Any idea? There are building permits up and work seems to be going on inside but I haven’t seen anybody there to ask if they have any information. Anyway, it’s a pretty blighted block at the moment so it would be great if some new restaurant or shop was going in.”

A few folks have asked me about this spot and we discussed the nearby Yellow House Restaurant on the 600 block of T Street, NW. Sadly when I walked by last weekend there was a stop work order:

Though the other permits said the place will still be a restaurant. I’m not sure if there are new owners or not but I’ll be sure to monitor its progress and post updates. Does anyone happen to know if it is just renovations or will become a new restaurant?

Incidentally I didn’t realize that this area was called the Duke Ellington Plaza:

The Duke definitely deserves less shuttered store fronts on his plaza.

From the press release:

(Washington, DC) – The DC Sports and Entertainment Commission will host the first ever Ethiopian Sports Federation festival in the District June 29th through July 7th at RFK Stadium. This annual fundraising event will honor influential Ethiopians in recognition of their contributions to their country as well as celebrate sports and cultural heritage.

“We are very proud to help bring the first Ethiopian soccer tournament and festival to RFK Stadium,” said Erik A. Moses, DC Sports and Entertainment Commission chief executive officer. “The Sports and Entertainment Commission and the District are very excited to host the thousands of revelers converging on the city for this unique and important sporting and cultural experience.” More after the jump. Props to Abol the newish Ethiopian restaurant located at 4422 Georgia Ave. I dig the sign itself as well as the neon underneath. As I’ve written earlier I’m not a huge Ethiopian fan but this place looks great now inside and out. Has anyone given them a try yet? Good stuff?

I have heard people rave about this spot. So tell me two things – is this the best Ethiopian restaurant in DC? What makes it stand out from all the others? I’m personally not a huge fan of Ethiopian restaurants in general and I don’t mean to sound ignorant or uncultured but in DC people seem to go bananas over Ethiopian food and I just don’t get it. So, secondly, tell me what is the great appeal? Is it the communal eating or is it something specific about the particular dishes, flavor, spices, etc.? Alright, I recognize I might sound like a lout but I’m seriously curious.

The bodega (yeah, I said bodega) across the street from the Petworth metro has Ethiopian Wine for sale. Has anyone bought some? I’m definitely going to check it out. So for a bonus point in what modern day country was wine first made? The answer to that question is one of the few remaining details I can recall from college wine tasting class. God bless Miami University, Ohio for offering that course!

This one is super cool as it is actually a mosaic. Also I think it was done by many kids in the Ethiopian and Latino communities. Check out the full mural after the jump. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for this tip. There has been a rumor for a number of months now that an Ethiopian Restaurant is coming to Georgia Ave. This place is on the corner of Georgia and Allison. Obviously it is not open yet but I looked through the window and it definitely looks like it is going to be a restaurant. I look forward to checking it out. Can anyone confirm this?
