“Dear PoPville,
Are there any local epidemiologists that can answer the question of whether or not / how often asymptomatic folks should get tested? I got tested once b/c of a potential exposure from a positive asymptomatic co-worker. Wondering if this should be a monthly activity.”

“Dear PoPville,
Yesterday I took a spill on my bike while riding on H street (those streetcar tracks can really get you) and was really scared and in pain. So many kind people immediately rushed to check on me, help me up, and get my bike out of the street. I was so touched by the immediate kindness and generosity of strangers in my time of need. From an email:
“We’ve secured sidewalk and street lanes for outdoor dining up at the Quarry House. It will be a fairly substantial cafe seating area wrapping the corner of Georgia and Bonifant, with a large portion composed of a closed off parking lane on Bonifant which will be tented and beer garden-y. The total seating capacity will be 58. Menu [below]; beers will rotate and specials will be boozy shaved ice and pitchers of summer cocktails. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to share a quick story of gratitude tonight. I had dinner at a friends house in Mt. Pleasant tonight, and when I got in my car to leave, I realized I had a very flat tire. My friend and I were deciding whether I should just leave it or if I could make it home safely to Petworth and deal with it tomorrow. I opted for the latter, but drove only a half a block when it became obvious that I could not drive with this tire. I pulled over on Monroe, on the East side of 16th, and a man named Ralph stopped to ask if I needed help. He pulled over and he began to help put on my spare, but it was rough getting the tire off. Two other guys, Pedro and Juan, came upon the scene, (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
On Saturday August 1st, our roommate went into cardiac arrest while on a run near the intersection of 13th and Mass. Ave. NW. A woman in the area immediately began performing CPR and flagged down authorities. He is currently in the hospital and recovering because of this hero. His family and friends would like to express their gratitude to the individual who saved his life. If you know who this hero is, please contact (203)-308-3254 or [email protected]. Thank you and well wishes to all!” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I thought it would be useful to share this news with the community about research on the effectiveness of various types of masks, specifically how ineffective, and actually worse than no mask at all, a neck gaiter may be. Here is an article from the Post discussing the research:
“In a recently published study, the researchers unveiled a simple method to evaluate the effectiveness of various types of masks, analyzing more than a dozen different facial coverings ranging from hospital-grade N95 respirators to bandanas. Of the 14 masks and other coverings tested, the study found that some easily accessible cotton cloth masks are about as effective as standard surgical masks, while popular alternatives such as neck gaiters made of thin, stretchy material may be worse than not wearing a mask at all.“
I know these are in common usage, especially with people exercising (including myself). I think people taking the effort to wear the neck gaiter in the first place are trying to be responsible, so kudos to that, but, as Bill Nye says, “…now you know”.”

“Dear PoPville,
I am wondering if you/your readers have any creative suggestions for safe, socially-distanced spaces to telework. I’m going insane in my little basement apartment. I’d love to go sit in a park or something similar, but of course there would be no Wifi there. I can’t be the only one facing this conundrum- has anyone else come up with a creative solution?”

Last week a few readers asked about the status of Sichuan Pavilion on K Street NW. Thanks to Michael for sharing the sad news of the signage being removed, confirming that another reader had heard the closure was likely permanent.
