These giant teddy bears are apparently wasted.
Thanks to Shannon for sending from Flavio (1073 31st Street, NW just off M Street) Friday night.

Update from Otello:
“Dear loyal friends & patrons:
After over 30 years in Dupont Circle, Otello restaurant has permanently closed its doors. As with many other restaurants, the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it impossible for us to stay in business. Some other restaurants were able to pivot to pick up and delivery services, but it was determined that this was not a viable option for our little restaurant.
We hope you keep Otello in your memories as a place for good food, good times and cheer. On behalf of the entire team at Otello, we thank you for your years of patronage and we will miss you all!
– Otello Restaurant”
Sadly their phone number has been disconnected as well so it appears to be another end of an era. The Washington Post reviewed them in 1985:
“The newest red-sauce and red-check Italian restaurant is Otello, just south of Dupont Circle. (more…)

Ed. Note: The Coupe opened in Columbia Heights back in October 2012.
Thanks to all who messaged us about the name change coming to Columbia Heights’ The Coupe on 11th Street, NW between Park and Monroe:
“Any word on The Coupe? I walked by today and the front doors now have signage for “Magnolia Cafe” and the inside is totally decorated for Christmas, complete with a Christmas tree. Would love to know what’s going on there!”
“Branding and signage at The Coupe has been replaced by “Magnolia cafe.” I’m intrigued, but can’t find anything about the change anywhere…”
Hmm, if you go to The Coupe’s website you get the following prompt: (more…)

Robert wanted to know: “what are the best and safest (best spacing between tables) outdoor eating/happy hour spots in DC right now?”
The early responses (add yours below):
“Grand Duchess, Lymans and Marx Cafe.”
“Nina May in Logan Circle was safe with great service and food.”
“@LauriolPlazaRes is doing an AMAZING job having taken over & tented their entire parking lot out back in addition to their usual outdoor seating. Wipes packets & disposable menus & ample space.”
“@TAonCapHill (Trattoria Alberto) has plexiglass between the tables. It feels so safe. The servers are awesome about masks and gloves.” (more…)

From a press release:
“The Smithsonian will reopen four more of its Washington, D.C., museums to the public Friday, Sept. 18: the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall; the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, both located at Eighth and G Streets N.W.; and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum near the White House.
These locations will reopen with new health and safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will have reduced days or hours of operation, and visitors will need to reserve free timed-entry passes to visit most locations.

“I got COVID tested this Tuesday morning at the Judiciary Square testing site.
I noticed a woman behind as the line progressed. As I got to the table where they confirm your birthday and give you the testing bag I could have sworn we made eye contact a few different times before we walked down for the test and out of the site. I almost said something as we were walking out, but didnt.
She had headphones on and one of the testing nurses complimented her shorts and I think I heard that we have the same birthday month. If this was you reach out because what could be more emblematic of these times!!”
Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. PoPville is not affiliated with either party, please proceed with any potential connection at your own risk using caution as you would any online encounter. For those curious about past missed connections, some have been made and when possible I’ll try to update when/if more are made.

“My husband, Courtney Tate, has been training for IronMan Maryland for more than a year. When it was cancelled due to COVID, we decided to put it on ourselves right here in DC. On Sunday, he started the swim at 7:30 at National Harbor – finally crossing the finish line looking strong more than 14 hours later across the Navy Yard pier bridge, just blocks from our home on Capitol Hill. We got pelted by raw eggs by a stranger who stopped in a car asking for directions at mile 25 – but that didn’t stop him! [Ed. Note: What the hell?!?!]
I arranged for more than 25 aid stations set up along the way including Nat’s Park, the Washington Monument and Haines Point, with more than 30 friends and neighbors volunteering to help keep him hydrated – all in IronTate masks!
And he raised $1,855 (and counting!) for the CDC Foundation’s work to find a vaccine for COVID.“
