Boiling point reached in Brookland (from their listserv):

“Not sure when, but sometime in the last few days we had another bicycle stolen from our shed. It’s a light green Jamis Aurora, men’s style, even though it’s mine.

Yes the shed was locked. Yes one bike was locked up within the shed, and that one is still there. Yes we have insurance that will cover PART of the cost of replacement. Yes we installed cameras. My husband is reviewing the tape today to see if there’s anything useful.

We’ll probably start keeping bikes inside- something we’ve been loathe to do because WHY SHOULD WE- we have a locked shed outside, and a curious, accident prone toddler inside. We’ll look into a taller fence. I’ll wrap my bike up in razor wire and unlock it every day wearing oven mitts because you know, that’s apparently a reasonable expectation around here. Fine. I was looking for another non controversial question so I was glad a reader requested this one…

OK earlier in the week the Washington Post reported:

“A proposal before the D.C. Council would permit bicyclists to yield instead of stopping at stop signs and red lights – when safe – without getting ticketed.”

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Act (PDF)

Interestingly the OP’s partner who is a cyclist “thinks that it’s too ambiguous. He thinks it relies too much on personal judgment and he doesn’t trust communication to be made by the appropriate people as to when its applicable and when it isn’t (proposal I think at it stands is only for small, less congested and less traveled intersections.)”

What do you guys think? Does it have a chance? Should it?

Found likely stolen Schwinn fixed speed bike @Sherman & Irving

“Found a vintage Schwinn frame, fixed speed bike in the alley behind my house at Sherman and Irving. Very unique components so I think it’s got to be stolen from a person who put some work into it.

Contact for details”

“Dear PoPville,

There is a rubber gasket and significant gap running down 9th street next to the convention center. I believe it extends from N to New York Ave. What is this and why is it here? My best guess is that rather than digging a tunnel for the metro here they essentially built a big platform on top of it for the road and the convention center, so this functions as an expansion joint like you’d see on a bridge. The gap is wide enough for a bike tire to slip into it, which I was unfortunate enough to experience while changing lanes recently.”

Been a while since we’ve talked about these:

“They are expansion joints. Due to changes in weather, hot and cold, materials expand or contract. You will most commonly see these on bridges. The reason why the convention center has these is because of the sky walks over the streets. The expansion joints allow the entire building to move together and prevents cracking.”
