Several times I’ve seen a guy riding my stolen bike

“Several times I’ve seen a guy riding my stolen bike in the past month. The bike was stolen over a year ago outside of St. Matthew’s Cathedral. I didn’t have the bike registered so I never reported it stolen. It is a specialty bike that is fairly unique. I am most certain it’s mine. Any recommendations on what I should say to the guy if I encounter him? I am aware that he could have bought it from the bike thief, but he himself could also be the bike thief. Helpful advice is appreciated. Snark is not. Thanks.”

From MPD:

“700 block of 6th Street, SW

The complainant observed suspects attempting to take his bike from the rear of the listed location. The complainant approached the suspects and they took off running. The complainant chased the suspects on foot; however, one of the suspects (b/m 18-20 years/Curly hair/Blk t-shirt and blk pants) produced a hammer and attempted to strike the complainant. The complainant was not struck and the suspect dropped the hammer in the 500 block of G Street, SW, where it was recovered by MPD.”

And across the street from the coming Takoda, in the new Shay building, is the new Chrome Industries location. Chrome’s website says:

“For over a decade, the creative communities throughout every major city have used Chrome bags, footwear and outerwear to help them survive the demands of the city. Wrenched is a tribute to these people and the cities in which they live and create in. Through each of their own unique perspectives, we’re given an insight to the best of everything their neighborhoods have to offer. This isn’t a guide to the same old played out tourist traps that you’ve already heard about a million times over. This is a glimpse into each city that we feature as told by its locals. This is the real-real … For tourists and lifers, alike.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to give my fellow bikers a head’s up that we aren’t completely immune to being mugged. I was recently biking around 9:15 pm near 5th and N St NW when I was pushed from behind and hit over the head with a gun (I was actually biking, not sitting at a red light). One of the guys was standing on the edge of the bike lane, looking like he was about to open a car door and was waiting for me to pass. As I went around him (I could only give him so much room as there was a car driving next to me), he pushed and hit me. After falling (and nearly being run over) three men were on me. After three more hits over the head, they took my phone and took off as cars arrived on 5th St. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet so the only injuries I received were from the bike fall. I hopped on my bike and took off. The MPD have been professional and helpful through the entire process.

I don’t think I could have done anything different as I wasn’t drunk, wasn’t wearing a backpack, and didn’t have my headphones on or phone out). As a biker (and a pretty big guy) I tend to feel safer than walkers. I think we are still safer, but not immune. Keep alert.”

“Dear PoPville,

Harrassment on 7th Street in Shaw

I was riding my bike to work (I live at 6th and P and go down this block every day and never have issues) and a guy was crossing P street in the middle of the street. When he saw me he starting running after me on my bike screaming “bitch” and reached out to shove me off of my bike but I swerved and he missed. Then he started chasing me and I had to run through the light on 7th and P to get away.

It isn’t the same man I don’t think from the other posts (I think I know which one that is). This guy looked to be late 20’s/young 30s, facial hair and was wearing a red jersey and flat billed hat with dark jeans.

I am sad to hear about so many incidents here, it’s just around the corner from my house and haven’t really heard about any problems until this summer.”

“Dear PoPville,

DC has been making a concerted effort to promote biking, but I came across a proposal that negatively affects bikers who live in Columbia Heights and Petworth. Today, Metrobus announced proposed changes to a number of bus lines including the 63 & 64. The basic proposal is to merge the 63 & 64 lines by altering the route of the 63 to run along 11th St between Monroe/Park and Florida. At Florida both lines would then shift back to Sherman and then connect with Vermont. You can see the details here.

Personally, I prefer combining the two lines as it means more frequent bus service on a single street, but as a biker I think Metrobus made the wrong choice in proposing to move both lines to 11th through Columbia Heights. Going down 11th I already have to dodge buses pulling across the dedicated bike lanes on my way to and from downtown. I hate biking on Sherman since it is busier, the lanes seem narrower, and there are not dedicated bike lanes. Plus, for those that ride the bus, Metro’s own studies also show that the 63 has better on time performance in this section than the 64. The distance between Sherman and 11th is very short, so the change would make minimal difference to most bus riders but would very much change the biking experience on this route. Thus, it seems far more logical to move the 64 to Sherman along this stretch. It would increase safety for bikers and improve the on time performance of buses overall – it seems like a win-win. I would encourage fellow bikers and bus riders on one of these routes to contact Metrobus and urge them to move the 64 line to Sherman in this section of Columbia Heights rather than moving the 63 to 11th. I’d be interested to know what PoPville readers think and, if they are interested, to let them know that there is a meeting to discuss the matter today (Thursday) at 5:30 at the MLK Library (901 G St NW).”
