Our annual reminder from the DC Beekeepers:

“Spring is here and honeybees sometimes go searching for new homes. They (and we) could really use your help. If you see a swarm of bees, please call or text (202) 255-4318 or email [email protected] and and a team of DC beekeepers will spring into action to give house-searching honeybees the home they are looking for! Insecticides will not take care of your situation, but we can.”

From a press release:

“The event [Wildlife Spotlight @State] will conclude with – a first for the State Department – projected images of wildlife, including many threatened species, on the Harry S. Truman building’s C Street façade. The visual event is in partnership with Discovery Communications, Vulcan Productions, and the documentary film Racing Extinction. The goal is to raise awareness of, and spur action on the global threat of wildlife trafficking. Members of the public are able to view the projection show starting at 6:20 p.m. at 22nd Street [between C Street and Constitution] in front of the State Department.”

ShawPossum

“Dear PoPville,

We live in Shaw and take care of an indoor/outdoor cat. We found this plump old possum occupying the cathouse when I went to wake up my cat this morning. He looked pretty comfortable and didn’t give up the warm new digs very easily. Animal Control suggested we scare him off with loud music. It just seemed lull him back to sleep though. I guess city possums don’t mind loud 90’s hip-hop at 7am?

hahaha awesome. Of note: I didn’t know cathouses were a real thing. Two, these thing terrify me. I’m heading to the Tiki Bar stat!!

fox
previous Fox sighting in Meridian Hill Park last December

From the Cleveland Park Listserv one resident reports:

“Yesterday [Sunday] in Tregaron Park, the grounds of the International School, along the fenced boarder of the back yards of the houses along Macomb St., the first block west of Connecticut Ave., a fox attacked my dogs as we were walking them along a trail. Then the fox turned on me! This is unusual behavior for a fox and indicates that it may be infected with rabies. I alerted animal control, and brought my dogs in for a rabies booster, but have not yet heard from them.”

Another reports:

“And I also saw a fox (there may be more than one) on Woodley Road and the corner of 36th about 10 days ago, plus our neighbor on Woodley (behind Tregaron) reported that her cats were bitten by a fox 2 days ago–which sounds like it might have been Saturday.”

and another:

“I saw the fox twice on Saturday, ranging in the backyards between Newark and Macomb Streets starting at the west end of Ross Place and going east about 6 houses. It was yipping and stood its ground rather than running when I appeared. This fox it isn’t just confined to Tregaron.”
