“Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived in the Van Ness neighborhood for 13 years and have seen motorcades on Connecticut Avenue many times. But the one that went by at 8:00 this morning was very odd. In addition to a few black SUV’s and DC police, there were several Montgomery County squad cars. And the centerpiece — instead of several black limos — was a tractor trailer carrying a large square container under a tarp, with a couple of hay bails strapped to the back. (Sorry, I wasn’t fast enough to get a picture.)

What could this have been?”

Michelle Goldchain with this head shaking find from Reliable Tavern:

“Only in D.C. can you buy ice cubes for approximately $1 to $2 each.”

Jason remembers Jessica Sidman’s classic The Ice Is Right: Is Artisan Ice the Final Frontier for Craft Cocktails?:

“Not all ice, it turns out, is created equal. While the cubes in your freezer (and many bars and restaurants) are clouded with bubbles and cracks, the premium stuff is dense and clear, so it melts slower and won’t water down your drink as quickly. Hand-carving allows bartenders to create larger blocks that fit the glass, rather than lots of smaller cubes, which means less ice surface area and less dilution. “If you’re going to spend $10 to $15 for a cocktail and it’s on the rocks, you should have the best ice you possibly can,” Ambrose says.”

Prince of Westend and many others asked:

“intense policy activity this morning starting at 18/Florida all the way down to Dupont circle. Including a chopper. Anyone know what’s up?”

I gotta get better at this – of course it was the National Prayer Breakfast at the Hilton!!

“Dear PoPville,

I found this curious and thought you might too. The pic is of an envelope taped to Sticky Rice’s door on H St. NE that says “Confidential for Owner.” The same envelope was taped to the doors of most businesses this morning between 13th and 10th (and maybe more but those were the streets I walked between).”

What do you guys think, some sorta marketing thing? Or the key to the collusion?

Ah performance art… Well since I’ve already typed out the title and am a semi practicing member of the tribe – from an email:

“Combining both of your favorites under one 9,200 square foot roof (the world’s largest Wawa®!), while there may not be any matches, wine or challah, there will be LED candles, carbonated Grape Juice, and Soft Pretzels. We’ll also be reciting all of the Shabbat blessings, so please BYOY. Wawa® doesn’t sell them (Yarmulkes) yet.

Many people consider Wawa® a sacred institution, and Jews worldwide certainly consider Shabbat to be one as well. So let’s gather ’round the communal table of the first D.C. location (Store #6001), and celebrate with all true Wawa® fans at this Shabbat of convenience.

This is the world’s first Wawa® Shabbawa. (more…)

A Previous uptick captured by Eric P.

Lots of reports of early morning helicopters in Dupont/Adams Morgan/16th Street. Anyone happen to know the deal?

Per usual I’m going with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

However, I can preemptively answer tonight’s queries from Joint Base Myer – Henderson Hall:

“There will be 15 United States Air Force Huey helicopters landing and taking off multiple times between 6:25 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Fort McNair Thursday January 25 for an exercise.”
