Ed. Note: Last week UrbanTurf reported:
“For more than two years, appeals have kept the planned-unit development (PUD) in limbo. However last week, the DC Court of Appeals, in its final decision on the PUD, affirmed that while the original PUD order offered insufficient justification for several provisions of the development, the response that the Zoning Commission issued on remand adequately addressed any outstanding concerns.
Between this decision and the time extension granted earlier this year, the development team has until March 2021 to apply for building permits.“

Update: The Washington Post reported:
“The White House is getting a taller fence as part of security improvements beginning this summer for the perimeter of the grounds.
Crews will replace the fence with a structure that will be about 13 feet tall, an increase of about five feet.”
So these barriers are just temporary while the new fence goes up. Thanks to all who messaged for the info.
Thanks to Meaghan for sending:
“It appears new barriers are going up at the White House. They are concrete barricades with wood planks on top. Their purpose seems to be to obstruct the view of who is going in and out; since they are placed up against the sidewalk, which see-through gate barriers are already placed against.” (more…)

Ed. Note: Back in 2010 we posted “Anti-teen Noise-weapon Hits DC at Chinatown Metro”, which were then promptly removed. Then in 2016 we posted Anti Pigeon Devices Removed!! “Both make intermittent, high-pitched squeals that are piercingly loud, at least to my 30-year-old ears”.
Annette writes that it’s from:
“The Farragut West Metro 18th & I St exit. The noise is so piercing I can barely tweet straight. Is it one of those anti-loitering noise things that’s only supposed to be audible by teens? (more…)

Lots of folks have been messaging this morning about the giant balloon spotted over Columbia Heights.
This is the famed imaging balloon of course! Our last sighting was June 26, 2019.
Our first sighting of the imaging balloon was back in October 2009.

“Dear PoPville,
Was walking through Kalorama with my fiancée and our pug earlier today when we came across a structure I would love to know more about.
Located on Belmont Rd. NW just south of the intersection with Waterside Dr., it’s a big concrete slab with railings all around and a large “cover” of some sort over a big square section. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
This enormous moth passed on to the next life in between our patio sliding screen door and glass door two nights ago. This is just a few blocks from the Petworth Metro. Can one of your readers identify him?
Services are Sunday at the 6th and I Synagogue.”
If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

I don’t know. I saw this in Adams Morgan/Lanier Heights, I believe this is in front of a Bed and Breakfast which is even stranger, anyway I have some thoughts. Dear God do I have some thoughts. But in the interim – caption contest – go!!
