I walk to work via NY Avenue east to west and I’ve noticed that Lafayette Square is barricaded in the mornings more and more often. What’s the deal? The weird thing is, you would think it would be for heightened security reasons, right? Interestingly, it’s not necessarily barricaded when foreign dignitaries are staying at Blair House, so what gives? Why the nuisance? Why can’t they wait to barricade after the morning commuters have passed through? (more…)

Want to preface that it’s laughable now.
Here’s the lowdown:
It’s 9:30 PM Thursday and we walk over to City Center after our movie. We stop in the plaza where Fig & Olive + Del Frisco’s + DBGB are connected.
My girlfriend and I were hugging closely and kissing a bit and chatting affectionately. And then a security guard walks over and says “Excuse me. There’s no public displays of affection here.”
Us: “Really?”
Guard: “Yeah they just called it over the radio.” (more…)

I’ve been living in the Mount Vernon Triangle area for many years now and as all these new buildings have popped up seemingly overnight, I’m left wondering what is going on with the corner of 6th and K NW? I live in a late 1930s brick wardman style home with a flat rubber roof. After it rains I notice this small debris washes off the main roof onto the roof over our back room and eventually down the gutter. I don’t think it’s mortar because motar is usually finer as it erodes, this stuff is a little coarser than kosher salt. Given the number of similar houses in the area, I’m wondering if anyone knows what it is?”

Is it just me or did a lot of dc smell like there was an electrical fire yesterday? When I got off the metro at archives there were 4 firefighters in the metro. Then all day outside my office (right outside the metro) it smelled like some sort of burning chemical/electrical fire. Then I smelled it when I got off the metro after work at Georgia Ave.”
