Capital City Market is located at 6th and Florida Ave, NE. This huge news came from the Washington Post yesterday:

Richard Brandenburg, 37, has been hired by Edens & Avant, the giant East Coast real estate development company, to serve as its first director of culinary strategy.

Much of the chef’s focus will be on rethinking Capital City Market in Washington. Brandenburg hopes to stock the wholesale-retail center with multiple restaurants, a culinary school, even a USDA hub — “a fun mix,” he says. One of the models for the complex, which will bring together restaurants and distributors, is the esteemed, community-minded Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco.

This house is located at 4521 Garfield St, NW:

Thanks to a reader for sending the word about this closure in Union Station. The reader writes,

“It seems the every popular liquor store in Union Station has closed. I swear they sold 1,000x more lottery tickets than anything else.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last night a window box of basil and cilantro plants were stolen out of our front yard in Petworth (Rock Creek Church Rd). Have you heard of this happening before to your other readers? Any tips on catching the crooks or avoiding this trouble in the future? Is there a rash of herb thieves on the loose? We’re going to install a motion sensor light, even though we had a bright light on in the front. Very strange they would want to steal them- don’t you think?”

As crazy as it sounds this happens every year in many neighborhoods. It seems arbitrary about where and what is stolen – herbs, flowers, chairs, packages etc. It even happens in Cleveland Park, there has been an epic discussion about a flower thief, last we heard:

As I was walking towards the State Department this morning, I was surprised to see a rather dirty, short man get off a bus (the L1) with a tremendous bouquet of hydrangeas. I am pretty sure that he is the same flower thief that others have seen. The flowers he was carrying were beautiful but looked like they came from a garden — the stems were not even and the blooms didn’t look commercially-grown and perfect.

Aside from a motion light – any other tips on how to deter herb (and other) thieves?

“Dear PoPville,

A very good friend of mine was beaten and robbed on the way home from the Red Derby Saturday morning at around 2am a few blocks east of 13th and Randolph. 3 men (not sure what they looked like) hit him in the face with a metal pipe of sorts, left him unconscious and robbed him. When he awoke he hailed a cab which took him to Wash Medical Center. His jaw was broken in 3 places and he had surgery Monday afternoon. His jaw will be wired shut for at least 3 weeks. I believe he filed a police report but have not been able to find anything in the on the listserves or blotters. He has been on morphine or the like and the hospital is not allowing visitors to see him so we can’t get the report number.

Tonight I heard of another person who was hit in the face with a pipe by 3 men on 14th St leaving the Derby Friday night/Saturday morning. He went to the hospital and was released.

Have you heard anything? What the fuck is going on in this area and what are the cops doing to protect those of us who contribute positively to society?”

This is horrifying. I also haven’t seen anything else mentioned on the listservs.

From MPD:

Unfortunately I must again inform the community of an incident that occurred on the trail yesterday morning. At about 8:15 AM a male victim was robbed on the trail alongside 300 R St. NE. The victim was walking on the trail and was approached by the suspect who asked for the time of day. The victim then retrieved his I-phone to the give the time and tried to walk away. However, the suspect brandished a handgun and robbed the victim of hi phone and wallet. There were no injuries.

The suspect was an 18-21 year old black male, 5’8″-5’9″ in height, weighing about 165 lbs. The suspect was also reportedly wearing glasses with dark frames. The tactic used by this suspect is very common, i.e. asking for time. Also be aware that walking alone and with your ear-buds in can make you an inviting target – it’s something we see on the Metro, for example, all too often.

I want to again ask everyone to be very cautious, to be aware of your surroundings, and to be wary of anything or anyone that is suspicious. Please call it in to 911. We do have officers giving the trail special attention 24 hours a day, so we are close by.

I also want to review the events of the last few months, and the strides the community has made in securing the trail. Unfortunately, I have seen some news outlets reporting information that is not entirely accurate.

Between May 5th and June 9th there were five incidents of concern on the trail. All were similar in time of occurrence, suspect description and methods. There was a taser brandished in one assault, but no one was ever tasered on the trail that I am aware of. MPD officers did recover a taser during the investigation of the incidents. In the last event on June 9th, MPD effected an arrest. There were no incidents after that until July 9th, when a robbery occurred at 11 PM on the trail. Now, on July 15th, we’ve had a robbery at 8:15 AM.

I do think we were successful in breaking the cycle of crimes that were occurring in May and June. We are now seeing some new developments and I ask for the community’s support as we investigate and address these. Being informed and aware is half the battle. With the additional steps taken, such as citizen patrols, and with continued diligence, I believe the community and MPD can provide a safe environment on the MBT.

MPD 5D Commander, Andy Solberg sends out the following message:

As many residents leave for summer vacations, the Fifth District will be instituting a program where you can call or email us to let us know if you will be away from DC during a vacation.

If you provide us the dates you will be away and provide us a local contact person, we will have our officers ride by your home when possible to keep an eye on things.

This is not a guarantee of any sort, but we will compile a list of homes and try to check on them as often as we can.

Please email your PSA lieutenant, or me, or call 698-0111 during business hours, with your request.

That’s freaking awesome. Is it realistic to think that this could be a citywide service?

“Pretty sweet Monte Carlo on Capitol Hill, right outside the Rayburn building. I’m not sure about the year, but it looks all stock, except for the sound system. Paint job is in great shape, which contrasts nicely with the wear and tear on the interior.”

From MPD:

Tagging and illegal graffiti are one of those occasional hot topics that affect a large portion of our citizens in varying degrees. It’s a very visible indicator of disorder, but is extremely hard for law enforcement to address in a comprehensive manner. It is underreported as a crime, even though the city, small businesses, BIDs and citizens spend significant resources to combat it.

Given that, I want to give kudos to our 5D Vice Officer Jonathan Jordan, who arrested a major player in DC’s tagging/graffiti subculture Sunday morning. Known by the moniker Asad ULTRA Walker, aka “MAR5”, this subject is a leader and founding member of the “KGB” graffiti crew that dates back to at least the early 90s. Current members of this crew are responsible for a huge amount of the graffiti across the city, including the Shaw, Columbia Heights, Brookland and Eckington neighborhoods. I’m sure many of you will recognize the “MAR5” and “KGB” tags.

I encourage the 5D community to report tagging and illegal graffiti as the crimes they are. I also want to recognize the excellent work by Officer Jordan and provide his contact information in case anyone has additional questions or information. He can be reached at [email protected]. Hopefully, with the community’s help, we can take additional steps to combat this disorder.
