“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and federal partners shared information about preparations for the 60th Presidential Inauguration, taking place on Monday, January 20, 2025 in the District of Columbia. The inauguration is a National Special Security Event (NSSE), a classification that brings federal and local partners together under the lead of the United States Secret Service. The NSSE designation allows significant federal, state, and local resources to be deployed, ensuring a robust security plan. District public safety agencies and federal partners have spent nearly a year developing the inaugural security plan. (more…)


From DDOT:

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced additional Clear Lanes locations in the District. The Clear Lanes program is a joint initiative between Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and DDOT that aims to improve bus travel times and enhance bus stop safety by using camera technology to identify illegally parked and stopped vehicles in dedicated bus lanes and bus zones. The locations are traffic sites where data analysis has identified need for expanding sections of bus lanes.

Beginning Monday, January 27, 2025, DDOT will initiate a 45-day educational phase for the expansion of bus zone and bus lane enforcement. During this period, violators will receive warning citations. Following the educational phase, starting Monday, March 17, 2025, DDOT will begin issuing $100 fines to vehicle owners for bus zone and bus lane violations.

“Metro’s General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke joined District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser for a press conference today detailing preparedness related to the first winter storm of the year. Working with jurisdictional partners, Metro continues to monitor winter weather approaching the region to adequately respond to service needs. Counting and Certification of the 2024 Presidential Election and State Funeral of Former President Jimmy Carter

Monday, January 6 – Thursday, January 9, 2025

On Monday, January 6, 2025 the counting and certification of the 2024 Presidential Election will occur during a Joint Session of Congress. From Tuesday, January 7, 2025, through Thursday, January 9, 2025, the State Funeral of former President Jimmy Carter will take place in the District of Columbia. Numerous law enforcement agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department, the United States Secret Service, the United States Capitol Police and others will provide security for the event to ensure the safety of visiting dignitaries, attendees, and members of the public.

“As Washington, D.C. prepares to host funeral events for former President Jimmy Carter, Metro is announcing temporary service adjustments to ensure the safety and security of attendees and residents.

Metrorail Service Adjustments:

Metro will close the Archives – Navy Memorial rail station to customers starting Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. and reopen at 5 a.m. on Jan. 8, at the request of the Secret Service. Trains will bypass the station.
Metrobus Service Adjustments:

Security zones around the White House, the U. S. Capitol, and the National Cathedral will close off several streets to traffic, including transit vehicles.”

“On New Year’s Eve, fares will be free after 8 p.m. thanks to a partnership with Miller Light and Coors Light’s Free Rides Program, which will help revelers get home safely and responsibly. Faregates will be open from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and no SmarTrip card will be needed. Bus customers will not need to tap between those hours either.
