From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) issued fleet expansion permits to dockless operators in the District of Columbia. With the new permits dockless operators will add up to 300 bikes and 435 scooters. As of May 1, 2019, a total of 4,935 dockless vehicles will be permitted to operate in the District. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I know many readers have been following the city-wide conversation about making our streets safer to prevent the kinds of senseless pedestrian and cyclist deaths we’ve been even more attentive to since the tragic deaths of Dave Salovesh and Abdul Seck.

One of the places we have a chance to make some real improvements right now is Bloomingdale. Already this year drivers have killed two pedestrians on North Capitol Street, and residents are nervous it’s only a matter of time before something similar happens on the pedestrian-heavy 1st Street NW. Despite being a residential road, commuting cars cut through and speed through the stop signs to catch the lights at the intersections of 1st and Florida and 1st and Rhode Island. Just last week covered a violent crash right in this area on Tuesday that spilled onto the sidewalk. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday I was walking by shaw metro around 5 pm, and it looked like a junkyard for electric scooters – see picture. How does this fit in with the vision for making DC beautiful?

About an hour later, on my way back at the same location, a young woman zoomed past me on one of these scooters. She almost ran into people on the sidewalk and barely swerved past them. Then I heard the guy behind me muttering something along the lines of – next time someone does that to him on a sidewalk, he is just going to stick his knife in them. Then he yelled across the street at someone else on a scooter, telling them to slow their ass down. (more…)

Jen captures this bizarre scene:

“A bit of excitement outside Paisano’s in Georgetown tonight. Delivery driver somehow gunned it through the brick wall and onto the grass outside the Boys and Girls Club at Jelleff Rec Center. Nobody was hurt but we felt badly for the young guy inside the pizza place who had lent the driver his truck.”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser showcased plans to design and build the K Street Transitway, a major streetscape project on K Street NW with dedicated bus lanes, enhanced bicycle accessibility, and safer pedestrian intersections. The project is projected to improve bus speeds by 30 percent for an estimated 40,000 daily bus passengers.

“As DC continues to grow and prosper, we need to reimagine our major roadways for the 21st century with infrastructure improvements that make public transportation more efficient and reliable for residents who rely on it,” said Mayor Bowser. “The K Street Transitway project will transform Downtown with dedicated bus lanes, protected bike lanes, redesigned sidewalks, and safer intersections to help keep DC moving and growing.” (more…)

Full disclosure: I was gonna go with ‘Murder on the Green Line’ but, well, yeah, no.

Back2Fallow.

Thanks to Brian for sending from the Green Line.

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

“Dear PoPville,

In light of the recent incidents I wanted to share the close call I had yesterday crossing Eastern Ave.

Just another case of impatient and inattentive drivers putting others at risk, this time a police car. No blinker, and he was actually running a red light, since the green on my side is extended. After almost hitting me, he honks and peels our around me. If people in their cars, especially the police, continue to not care about those outside of them, more people will continue to die.”
