“Dear PoPville,

Fight on Greenline 5/22 10:30AM

I was traveling on the Green Ling towards Branch Ave. At L’Enfant Plaza stop there was a lot of screaming and yelling. There looked to be 4-6 teen boys jumping a teen girl. An older gentlemen jumped in to protect her and then the teens jumped him. He was down on the floor being kicked and punched, with bystanders calling for police, trying to get the kids off, etc. I was trying to record for a police report and one of the teens pushed me and in the scuffle ended up hitting me in the cheek/chin.

I ended up boarding the train with the girl and the man, still with no response from police. I called 911 (having had poor experiences with WMATA police in the past) but they explained since it happened on Metro it had to be taken care of through them–she then routed me to their dispatch who was beyond rude, explained to me that this had already been called in several times and there was a procedure to be followed. When I pressed about how I could submit photos/video and file my own police report since I was hit she told me that was not an option and hung up. (more…)

Dupont Circle – Washington, DC

“Dear PoPville,

Just a simple question: Why is there no air conditioning at metro stations like Gallery Place? Has it always been this way? As if riding the metro weren’t stressful enough, now that the summer heat is here, can we expect any respite?”

Ed. Note: Didn’t realize Gallery Place was also a hot station. Last October we learned that Chilled Air would return to Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metro stations this Spring.

So how did this affect your commute this morning?

From WMATA:

“Metro overnight temporarily removed all 3000-series cars from service after we received a report of a door malfunction for which we need to identify the cause. This voluntary safety action reduces the number of available rail cars by ~15%. (more…)

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced it will begin running all Yellow Line trains to Greenbelt more than a month earlier than expected – starting Saturday, May 25 – when the Platform Improvement Project begins at six Yellow and Blue line stations south of Reagan National Airport. The service adjustment, originally scheduled to take effect in July, will allow Metro to provide more reliable service between the airport station, downtown DC and points north during the summer shutdown. Thanks to bowtch for sending on Saturday around 5:30pm:

Thanks to Blaise for sending photos from Florida Ave NE and 12th Street NE. This was the ghost bike installed after Dave Salovesh was hit and killed here in April. (more…)

Ed. Note: Given the current state of Vision Zero, I say the more traffic lights the merrier.

“Dear PoPville,

I work around 14th and U and the amount of utility construction in the area is nuts. I’m not 100% positive what the end game is supposed to look like, but there are currently six different traffic lights on one corner of 14th and V. There are a lot of similar corners in the area, but this one in particular is egregious.”

“Dear PoPville,

I want to put the warning out that Lime scooters keeps debiting users’ credit cards for unauthorized charges.

Over the weekend, the Lime app set the “auto-reload” function to “ON” without my permission. It then debited my credit card for separate $10 and $20 transactions to add $30 of credits to my account. I complained to Lime and they said it would take 7-10 business days to refund my credit card. I ensured that auto-reload was set to “OFF” even though I know it was never turned on. (more…)

Speaking of vaping etiquette

From a press release:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced today she has introduced the Banning Smoking on Amtrak Act of 2019, which would codify Amtrak’s internal policy prohibiting smoking, including electronic cigarettes, on its trains.  The bill is modeled after Norton’s bill, enacted into law in 2018 as part of the FAA Reauthorization Act, that clarifies that the smoking ban on airplanes includes electronic cigarettes.
