“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans to continue the demonstration pilot for motor-driven cycles, also known as mopeds, through December 31, 2021, as part of the District’s continued commitment to foster new shared mobility options.

Companies that want to participate in the pilot must meet the terms and conditions of a new Public Right of Way Occupancy Permit (PROWOP). The terms require moped riders to follow current laws related to the operation of mopeds such as wearing a helmet, possessing a valid driver license, and never riding on sidewalks and bike lanes. All companies applying to participate in the pilot will be allowed to operate up to 800 vehicles during the demonstration period. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

There’s a section of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail that goes through Navy Yard SE, where there is a large boardwalk section. I’ve taken several walks along this route and seen many mopeds and motorcycles being driven full speed over the boardwalk pedestrian bridge there in full daylight in the afternoon. Today (Monday) two at once drove over it, then turned around and came back, while there were A LOT of pedestrians walking. There were elderly couples, people with strollers, people with wobbly toddlers, vet techs taking day-boarded dogs for walks, and everyone scrambled to avoid being hit and the poor dogs were terrified. “Metro today announced free shuttle bus service and other travel alternatives to help customers begin planning for this summer’s closure of four Green and Yellow line stations scheduled for reconstruction. Starting Saturday, May 29 through Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Prince George’s Plaza, and West Hyattsville stations on the Green and Yellow lines will be closed. (more…)


Yikes, thanks to Alex for sending at 11:21am: “Someone crashed into the lobby of the Drake on 17th and Mass and drove away. My dad lives in the building. He said a car drove the wrong way up 17th, got on the sidewalk, hit the cars that were parked on the street, crashed into the building and drove off.

“Metro has selected Hitachi Rail Washington LLC (“Hitachi Rail”) to build the system’s 8000-series railcars in the U.S. The contract, valued up to an estimated $2.2 billion, includes a base order of 256 railcars, with options to build up to 800 in the fleet.
