“Dear PoPville,
I’m just curious if you have received any reports of a loud disturbance coming from Meridian Hill Park last night between 10:40-11:30 PM? I live at the bottom of the park and was awoken by a large gathering of men chanting in unison for close to an hour. This also occurred in the Fall and after an hour or so I saw cop lights and the singing/chanting stopped. I didn’t see any cops last night although I called the non-emergency police line to report this disturbance. It seemed to have broken up on its own.
I was at a loss for what this gathering was until my co-worker pointed out it could be a Wiccan gathering on the solstice. This makes sense since the last one I heard occurred around the Fall solstice and yesterday was the Spring solstice.
Have any intel on this??”

“Dear PoPville,
All this nice weather has me thinking about the summer pool season. I know there were rumors that the East Potomac (Hains Point) pool would be closed for a lengthy period of time for repairs. Any update on whether that’s happening? I’d hate to be without that pool all summer!”
DPR tells me the good news:
“the pool will be open this summer.”
Ed. Note: T minus (around) two months till outdoor pools open!

Excellent news from Shoes McCoat:
“newly restored Mellon Fountain flows again 3/17 Gr8 news for our mallard friends”

From a press release:
“The National Gallery of Art announced today that the Andrew W. Mellon Memorial Fountain, situated at the apex of the Federal Triangle complex in downtown Washington, DC, will operate once again beginning March 17, 2016—the Gallery’s 75th anniversary. On September 25, 2015, the National Park Service transferred custody of the fountain and the surrounding triangular park, which are dedicated to Gallery founder Andrew W. Mellon, to the National Gallery of Art. The two-phase total restoration and renovation of the fountain and site is made possible by a major grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Something really needs to be done to control the skateboarders that on a regular basis use the fountains at Meridian Hill park as a skateboarding ramp. Not only is this a safety issue for skateboarders and others, but the skateboards are also damaging the concrete surface of the fountains. The park is there to be enjoyed by everyone in the way that it was intended to be used. It is not a skateboard park. Let’s stop ruining our park through acts like this and vandalism.”
From an email:
“I thought you all might be interested in the vintage art my company created. In Washington, our non-profit partner is the Potomac Conservancy. Cool art for a good cause.”
Very cool. You can purchase posters and more here. And speaking of awesome and Rock Creek Park – here is Rock Creek Park by the Blackbyrds
“Dear PoPville,
Just walked by the canal and noticed it is very low or maybe drained. Are they doing work on it?”
Anyone happen to know what’s up?

“Dear PoPville,
Just wanted to share some photos of the National Park Service clearing snow from the pocket park at 11th and Maryland, NE. In the 5 years I’ve been in my apartment, they have never cleared. Now? Bobcat, 3 crew members shoveling and salt!”
