National Park Service Donated “breast meat from 116 resident Canada geese to D.C. Central Kitchen last week”

From the National Park Service:

“The National Park Service (NPS) along with the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment donated the breast meat from 116 resident Canada geese to D.C. Central Kitchen last week. The meat will be used in the healthy meals D.C. Central Kitchen prepares daily for multiple nonprofit partners, including homeless shelters, rehabilitation clinics and after school programs.

The geese were captured and euthanized from Anacostia Park in early July as part of the park’s wetland management efforts. The meat was tested, deemed safe for consumption and 100 pounds of breast meat was donated to D.C. Central Kitchen.

“Receiving the donated breast meat last year allowed our organization to provide healthy meals to over 400 people around the city and this year we plan to do the same,” said Amy Bachman director of procurement and sustainability. (more…)

Found this by chance, but it looks like the National Park Service entered into a partnership/lease agreement with the Federal City Council (run by former mayor Tony Williams along with DC corporate big wigs).

Looking at a capital investment of $30-40 million across all three courses (including a driving range at Rock Creek!!)

“National Park Service Finalizes Concept Plan for Buzzard Point Park”

“The National Park Service (NPS) has released a Final Development Concept Plan for Buzzard Point Park, which includes ideas from the public on how to create an enjoyable and unique community waterfront park.

Through public engagement, the NPS gathered the best ideas for re-imagining Buzzard Point Park as a peaceful retreat for both recreation and relaxation. This process identified many exciting new opportunities for the park’s 3.5 acres with designs drawing from the native marshlands historically located along the shoreline.

The NPS developed two initial concepts for the park’s design. Both concepts incorporate the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail into the design. In Concept 1, the trail would follow the shoreline and be surrounded by landscape features. Concept 2 places the trail above the river on an elevated structure.

Other design elements include uninterrupted access to the river’s edge, a pedestrian promenade, a kayak launch, grass dunes, open lawn areas, restrooms and other facilities. Both concepts incorporate facilities to test a kayak sharing program and open spaces for a variety of play, educational and interpretive opportunities. (more…)

May seem obvious to some but a good reminder not to be complacent:

“I had my purse and phone stolen at Banneker pool two summers ago, and I know this is a pretty regular occurrence at this time of year. I now lock my stuff up in a locker with a padlock which helps me relax and enjoy my swim a lot more.

A few weeks ago as I was leaving Banneker pool, I overheard another swimmer reporting her bag was stolen and just this past weekend, someone sitting near me on the pool deck had their phone swiped.”

Starting Friday DPR Spray Parks Hours Extended to 8:30pm

“The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announces that beginning Friday, June 30, spray parks will operate from of 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM

. Additionally, in observance of the Independence Day holiday all DPR administrative offices, summer camps, recreation/community centers and indoor aquatic facilities will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, 2017. Outdoor aquatic centers will operate from noon to 6 pm on Tuesday, July 4th.

Klingle Valley Trail “the first time the city has converted a road into a trail just for bicyclists and pedestrians”

“Mayor Bowser cut the ribbon on the new Klingle Valley Trail and celebrated by leading the trail’s inaugural community walk/ride. The event showcased the new trail that stretches from Woodley Park through Cleveland Park and Mount Pleasant and connects to Rock Creek Park. The Mayor was joined by Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Leif Dormsjo, the Klingle Valley Trail project team, Washington Area Bicyclist Association representatives, and community members.

“Back in 2015, we started this project with two goals in mind: turn a washed-out roadway into a beautiful, new trail, and protect Klingle Valley from traffic and pollution,” said Mayor Bowser. “Today, the Klingle Valley Trail, our first road-to-trail project, offers a safe route for bikers and walkers to connect through our Northwest neighborhoods and into Rock Creek Park, and its updated, sustainable infrastructure means we will be able to enjoy this new trail for years to come.” (more…)
