More good restaurant news for Shaw/Ledroit Park – thanks to a reader for sending:

“Saw some good progress on the brick and mortar Rito Loco on 6th and Florida today. After a delayed opening (they had initially mentioned a Cinco de Mayo opening), it looks like things are moving!”

For those not familiar you can check out their menu here.

“Dear Popville,

Any chance we can get an update on the new restaurant from the owner of Thai X-ing that you wrote about in September? I absolutely can’t wait to try it!”

I sent another email to the folks at Thai X-ing to try to get a firm date but haven’t heard back yet. But walking past this weekend I did notice that they have a live plant out front so it’s gotta be soon! Also a peek in the windows reveals it’s gotta be very very soon:

One of my favorites from Florida Ave was tagged with graffiti but I’m happy to see it’s back in beautiful form.

“Dear PoPville,

I live on the eastern side of Shaw, where there are a dearth of grassy parks that my 7-month-old baby can crawl around on. I noticed a potentially nice space near the playground at Kennedy Rec Center at 7th and P NW with tall trees, winding paths and lots of grass. Yesterday, we tried it out. The only other group was a triad, sitting by the fence, chatting, surveying the park and giving me a suspicious look.

I set the blanket out, kicking away bottle caps, bandaids and pieces of glass. When we looked over to the other group, we noticed a man stumble up, hand over some cash, and take a little baggie from them. Lots of weary side eye was directed our way.

Needless to say, we felt a little unwelcome. My husband later pointed out that the glass may have been intentionally thrown around to deter the likes of me.

So, what to do? Should we forget about the park, leaving the space for the group to conduct business? Should I keep coming back, but mind my own business? Should I round up my parent friends and have a ‘baby sit-in’? What’s the protocol here? What do other neighbors think of that space?”

“Dear PoPville,

I had my bike stolen the other night right from outside of the shaw metro. The thieves cut my lock and took the bike. Sure enough I see an ad for the same bike on craigslist a day later offering it at a very low price – it was clear they were trying to get rid of it quickly. The photo was not actually of my bike, so I was only 90% sure it was the same one. When I met them to confirm it was mine and “purchase” it, my plan was to just take it. But I was met by two people who came in a car and the bike didn’t have the wheels on it so a getaway didn’t seem likely. I reluctantly paid them $100 for my bike back, but told them I knew they stole it or at least they know it was stolen. Naturally, they claimed to have “bought it off some guy on the street” the previous day.

I filed a police report once I noticed it was gone and I know what the person who sold it to me looks like and their phone # – is there any way to get these people in trouble?

I wanted to go for the sting type of operation, but I didn’t see any police nearby and I don’t have any documentation that I even own the bike.”

Back in 2011 we noted the 35th anniversary of Capitol Supermarket. Their website says:

Originally a Safeway store in the 60’s and early 70’s, the store became Capitol Supermarket in April 1976. We are a hard working Korean-American family with 3 decades of experience in the grocery business. We started by selling mainly mainstream everyday items at a low price, but as time passed our grocery store changed with the times. Because our nation and our city is such a melting pot, we began selling international foods including a full line of Latino, Asian, and African products. In 2006, we added a full line of fresh seafood including fresh whole fish, fresh clams and mussels and live blue crabs in the summer. In 2008, we updated our beer and wine department to add more fine and imported wines and a wider selection of micro-brew and craft beers. Also in 2008 we upgraded our produce case to hold a wider selection of fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy eating. More recently we began selling more all natural and organic food items and for those on the go, we partnered with the Culinary Circle brand and added a full line of gourmet ready-to-heat and eat entrees.

We are not finished upgrading!

We are planning even more exciting changes in the upcoming years including adding more hard to find products to our store. Although our store has changed over time, we have not forgotten our original vision of providing savings to our loyal customers. So please keep checking in and see what’s new at Capitol Supermarket!

So what do you think of the facelift?
