The accolades make even more sense now…

From an email:

“The Dabney has not one or two but FOUR versions of the classic cocktail to suit your drinking needs. They include:

– Negroni Classico: Fords Gin, Campari, Cocchi di Torino, Orange Oil

– Negroni Spagliato: Green Hat Navy Strength Gin, Don Ciccio E Figli Cinque, Campari, Old Hill Betwixt Cider, gin botanicals

– Rhubarb Negroni: Bluecoat Gin, H&H Rainwater Madeira, Sfumato Amaro, Rhubarb

– Negroni Jello Shots: Yes, you read correctly. Smooth Ambler Gin, Campari, Sweet Vermouth, gelatin

Each take on the Negroni is $13, and half the price of each drink purchased will go to DC Greens, an amazing local organization that chef Jeremiah Langhorne and the team at The Dabney work with regularly.

Negroni Week runs through this Sunday, June 12.

DC Greens uses the power of partnerships to support food education, food access, and food policy, in the nation’s capital. They’re working toward a city where food education is on the menu in every classroom; where doctors write prescriptions for fresh fruits and vegetables as a matter of course; where urban agriculture is a valued element of our cityscape; and where zip code doesn’t determine life expectancy.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’d like to let you, PoPville, and the community know about a man in the Shaw area (around Florida and Georgia Aves NW) coming up to people and harassing them for (I assume) money by putting his hand in front of people’s faces (he doesn’t actually speak minus some mumbling: “come on”, “gimme” etc.) and following you if you try to walk away.

I first saw this man on Saturday (6/4) – he was tripping people as they tried dodging him and walking away, and after tripping them, he would move on to the next passerby. At one point, he even took a bunch of balloons near the soon-opening Cava and popped them in a bunch of people’s faces as they waited for a stoplight to change. (more…)

From Food & Wine magazine:

“It’s no small feat for a restaurant to source 100 percent of its ingredients from the region, especially if the area is the mid-Atlantic, which isn’t known for bountiful produce. To turn those ingredients into outstanding food is more challenging still. To do this at The Dabney, chef Jeremiah Langhorne obsessed over historic cookbooks. The resulting dishes—aged ham toast with truffle Mornay sauce, peanut butter cake with celery ice cream—taste wonderfully modern but have roots that go back hundreds of years. The local pride extends beyond food to an excellent list of hard ciders, all also found in the mid-Atlantic.”

Agree with the accolade?

Back in November of last year we learned that Half Smoke would be “serving sausages and other fast, casual menu items” at 7th/Georgia and Florida Ave, NW. I was starting to wonder if this was still happening and I guess it is because they just posted an addendum to their liquor license placard:

“Applicant requested to increase the seating capacity for the Summer Garden from 24 seats to 50 seats.”

Stay tuned…

bike

Yesterday morning a reader reported:

“Someone rode off on our surrey bike today. It was parked on 6th street so my cameras didn’t catch them going down Marion. I don’t think they will get very far. Please help us look out for it. It’s very (VERY) conspicuous.”

Around 3:30pm that day C.Jønez tweeted us:

“is this it?? Spotted just now passing Shaws Tavern on U st being ridden by 4 younger looking people.”

I emailed OP who sent the photo above: “we got it back thanks to your tweet!”

dunya
801 Florida Ave, NW just east of 9th and U Street

Thanks to a reader for passing the word that Dunya closed Sunday night:

“It’s time to say goodbye… FAREWELL weekend at our bar;
We want to say thank You all for supporting us and enjoying with our service, staff and DJs…”

Dunya opened pretty recently in December 2013. Updates when we learn what happens to the prime space – and roof deck.
