I thought these were a couple of cool renovations going on in Petworth. I know not everyone likes when row houses are broken up but I think the one above on New Hampshire Ave, NW turned out pretty well. Do you like the way it turned out?

And the one below has always been a favorite of mine. According to the permit looks like it is going to be a living space instead of retail. I’d love to live there.

This rental is located at 3654 New Hampshire Ave NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“You now have a great opportunity to lease this nice 1 bedroom apartment located only 1/2 block away from the Petworth Metro Station.

* Heat, water and hot water included with the rent. Tenant pays electricity and cooking gas.
* Laundry facilities in the basement.
* Off-street parking available for $100.00/month on the premises.
* On-site resident manager.
* Cable and high speed Internet ready.”

We spoke about this place in Oct. and people were generally fans so wanted to let folks know another room became available. This 1 bedroom is yours for $1183.

For those looking to live closer to 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights, this could be a good option for $1400 at 1435 Newton St NW.

After our brief reader update last week I wanted to talk to Project Manager Ted Trabue to get a bit more info. He was kind enough to meet me Tues. afternoon at the space at 3632 Georgia Ave, NW next to Looking Glass Lounge.

Let me start off by setting the record straight (no pun intended) on some reader speculation – despite the name it’s not going to be a gay sports bar in the mold of Nellie’s on U St, NW. (In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, not that there’s anything wrong with that!) It is going to be a sports bar for everyone – gay, straight, black, white, men, women, football fans, soccer fans and even cricket fans if folks are interested. In other words – this is going to be a sports bar that will cater to the entire community/neighborhood.

Now a bit more about the bar. As you can tell from the photos, the construction has progressed nicely and they should be finished in the next week or so. The construction team is the same folks behind Clyde’s and Old Ebbit Grill downtown so they are very experienced. If and of course that is a big if – all the permits are acquired in a timely manner, the bar should open the first week of December. There is no kitchen in the facility but fresh food will be catered on a daily basis.

There will be 12 draft beers, consisting of a mix of domestic and imported, on tap. There will be 9 TVs with the possible addition of a 10th. The bar will seat between 12-15 and the total capacity inside will be around 80. There will be a small outdoor area out back that will hold 4 tables. As mentioned above they will show all sports and will try as best as possible to cater to the requests of the patrons.

So for now, let’s all hope that they get their permits in a timely manner! I’ll update when the menu, beer list and an exact date for opening is released.

“Dear PoP,

yesterday while walking home I had a nice chat with the guy doing the build out on a new bar/lounge going in next to Looking Glass. It will be called the Blue Banana. They were building two seating areas in the front and rear with banquettes and tables. The middle section will have the bar on the right side and tables on the left. They made a slight grade to the floor at the entrance rather than putting in a step to maintain wheelchair accessibility.

It’s too early to see what the finishes will look like, but he said it will be very modern/contemporary. They wanted to be open by now but permits, etc…. They hope to open the week before Thanksgiving. If everyone there is as nice and straightforward as the guy I talked to was, this is going to be a great place.”

Blue Banana is a sports bar coming to 3632 Georgia Ave, NW. We last spoke about the project here and you can find more background info here.

I noticed that the construction was progressing nicely. Stay tuned for updates as they come closer to opening.

From MPD:

Safe Communities Halloween Fest. There will be costume contests, MCgruff birthday card contest, moon bounce, cotton candy machines etc. We will also be integrating a block party with local youth talent from the community and late night soccer.

This will be taking place at 801 Shepherd st. NW WDC from 3:30pm-8:00 pm.”

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos or news please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.  I’m aware not everyone loves pets.  But they bring me (and others) a lot of pleasure.  It’s cool, hold tight, a new post is coming in a half hour, you can make it!

Photo by MJ, first ever Red Derby Roof Deck opening 10/22/10

We’ve known for a couple of years that Red Derby (located at 14th and Quincy St, NW) was looking to get a roof deck but excitement began to build in earnest when permits were filed this past June. As some know, I was sick as a dog last week but I started receiving emails Friday night about the Derby’s deck opening and at that moment I fully recovered. Special thanks to MJ for sending some photos and sending the very early word. Also thanks to all the other readers who sent in word about the opening.

As some will note, it is a bit unfortunate that the deck opens just as cold weather is coming however, this weekend was beautiful and when I checked it out on Sat. I also spotted some heaters. So unless we get a crazy winter like last year, I’d say it’ll be open for a while. And of course next Spring is absolutely going to kick ass.

One of the best bars (if not the best bar) in DC just got way better. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

The flier says:

“Drop dead gorgeous renovation w/ all new windows, new furnace & CAC, gourmet kitchen w/ top of the line Energy Star appliances, ceramic bathrooms which will make your jaw drop, and beautiful new hardwood floors, decorator paint colors throughout, custom large deck on rear and 1 car garage w/ automatic opener. Extra loft/den area would make great office/playroom or exercise area!”

You can find more info here and photos here.

So people ask me how do I pick homes for GDoN and rental options. GDoN posts are homes that I usually pass during my walks. Exceptions are houses that are emailed to me by folks. Rental options I usually find via craigslist but sometimes requests are emailed to me as well. These are normally indicated by “reader request, owner request” etc. So don’t hesitate to email me with interesting homes/rentals you come across.

Anyway, I saw this house last weekend and thought it would still be for sale when I planned on posting it today. I was (happily) surprised to see that it was already under contract. I’ll admit, I didn’t think it was going to go for this asking price. But I do think think the renovation looks good. And since you guys are better at searching the archives of this site than I am, didn’t another renovated house on this block go for a similar price? What do you guys think of the reno? Are you surprised that the asking price of this 4 bed/3.5 bath was $575,000?
