“Dear PoP,

I have been meaning to write you for a couple of weeks about Tom the Egg Guy, who is at the Petworth Farmer’s Market. I have been getting my eggs from him, as well as many of our neighbors, since the market started. I love his eggs and attempt to let everyone about how delicious they are. Apparently he also goes to the DuPont Farmer’s Market as well. Now, with our Farmer’s Market ending in a couple of weeks, I have been worried about how I am going to survive the winter without them. I asked Tom if he sold his eggs anywhere in town and he said no, but that he was considering talking to YES! Organic Market about maybe carrying his eggs. I told Tom I would request that at the store as well. I am going to ask Tom this week if he has talked to anyone at the store yet, but in the mean time, if you can help me reach out to more of the Petworth population, to please ask YES! to carry his eggs the next time they are in the store, the more requests they get the more they will consider the suggestion (at least this is what Gary Cha-owner has said that part of his business philosophy is to be responsive to his customers). Please help me be able to get the best eggs I have ever tasted year round. I doubt I am the only person who would be willing to purchase a dozen a week. The store has a suggestion book, I wrote up my request in there.”

I also happen to be a fan of Tom so I think this would be great. I never thought I could tell the difference between eggs but his really are awesome. In addition to the instore suggestion book, you can contact YES! Organic Market on-line here. Any other fans of Tom?

Thanks to all who sent in word. Sorry for the delay in posting. (Ed. Note: I’m fighting some sort of brutal cold/flu and I’m pretty wrecked right now. So I apologize in advance if there are some delayed postings today/tomorrow).

MPD reports:

“Units received a call for sounds of gunshots just before 1am and located an unconscious black male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Members of the Homicide Branch are on the scene handling the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-919-CRIM(E).”

“The male victim has been pronounced. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.”

and from Council Member Bowser:

“Neighbors- I was briefed during the night of a fatal shooting on Georgia Avenue, between Georgia and Varnum Streets. The victim is a young black male. It appears to have happened in front of an apartment building on the east side of Georgia. I understand that the assailant walked up to the victim and shot. MPD has not released any lookout information as yet. MPD investigated during the night and at daybreak for evidence.

This is the third outbreak of violence in this short three blocks in several weeks. Since our larger crime meeting, I’ve conducted a smaller group one to focus on this sub area. MPD and other agencies are is investigating and working many angles to break up this fight.”

Construction started in earnest back in April and they’ve opened their doors (a couple store fronts south of Looking Glass Lounge) last week. I know not everyone is a huge fan but score one for another vacant storefront being filled. It may not be my choice every night but I’m happy for the option. And they deliver, you can order online here.

This rental is located at 3634 Georgia Ave NW (above Looking Glass Lounge):

The Craigslist ad says:

“Large, bright 2Br/1Ba in Col. Heights, with Open floor plan, granite/stainless kitchen, hardwood floors, washer/dryer just 1 block from Metro. Pets Allowed case-by-case.”

Wild. I wonder if this is the former yoga studio space? Anyway does $2200 sound reasonable for this 2 bed/1 bath?

This home is located at 934 Quincy St, NW:

The flier says:

“Gorgeous renovation in Columbia Heights. This large row home has brand new bamboo flooring, Bosh stainless steel appliances, marble bathrooms and private parking w/ a deck in rear. 3 bdrms, 3.5 bath and a fully finished basement. Check out the virtual tour for photos!”

You can find more info here and a mouse on house tour here.

This 3 bed/3.5 bath is going for $624,900. Do you think it’ll go for that?

When I first heard about this late last night I felt like I got punched in the stomach. It’s not that it was a huge surprise as they’ve been open for over 40 years but it’s one of those places that you feel like will be around for ever. It’s the type of place that needs to be open for ever. Given all the discussions of race and crime and hate this is one place that you never have to worry about. Patrons are black and white and the owners are equally kind to all who enter. I feel like I overuse the term gem in the city sometimes but if any place warranted such a description it is this one.

The Hitching Post is located at 200 Upshur St, NW (across the street from the Old Soldiers Home) at the corner of Rock Creek Church Rd, and Upshur. They serve the most gigantic portions you’ve ever seen. (This was the title of the first People’s District interview here with the Hitching Post’s owner Mr. Carter.)

And this probably means that one of the last classic juke boxes in the city is nearing its final days. I’m sure it’s possible that whoever buys the new place will keep it a restaurant/bar, and I certainly wish whoever buys this space the best, but it is safe to say we are nearing the end of an era.

The property is currently on the market for $850,000.

This awful brutal insane shooting war continues. Around 4:15 or 4:30pm there were multiple shots on the 4000 block of 4th St, NW. This is right near a shooting that took place Sat. night, not to mention the previous shootings that have occurred over the past 3 weeks around Shepherd St, NW.

Again, this shooting is that much more frightening because it took place in the daytime when parents are literally walking and pushing their children in strollers. I just returned from the scene and I must’ve seen around 20 of those white cards indicating shells on the ground. Nearby residents believe a car may have been involved in the shooting. This is terrifying.

I’ve gotten emails from multiple residents who are scared, angry, frightened and absolutely fed up. That’s pretty much all I can say in this post. Everyone is fed up. The situation is horrible. It appears nobody was hit this afternoon so there is not likely to be a large media reaction. I don’t mean to question tactics but clearly something has got to change. Can tactics help mitigate what is clearly a gang/crew war with retaliation after retaliation?

There is a crime meeting scheduled for Sat. morning. From Councilmember Bowser:

“Oct. 9 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

St. Gabriel’s Church, School Hall
510 Webster Street, NW

Cathy Lanier, Chief of Police; Kimberly Missouri, Commander, Fourth District; Robert Hildum, Interim Director, Department of Youth and Rehabilitation Services; and Karen Feinstein, Executive Director, Georgia Avenue/Rock Creek East Family Support Collaborative will join me for an in-depth review of recent criminal activity and actions initiated to thwart crime in Petworth. I am also asking MPD to be prepared to discuss block captain training and sign-up for the neighborhood watch program.”

“Dear PoP,

Please help me. Speedo ran out of the house without his collar. With all the squirrels around there is no telling where he is. He is a Jack Russell Terrier. He bolted out of the house and took off down the ally and then ran behind the Methodist church and down New Hampshire Ave, NW then back up 7th St, NW from there is where I lost the trail”

If anyone spots him please email me and I’ll hook you up with the reader.
