Petworth Metro Leak

“Dear PoPville,

A small mystery in the Petworth metro. In the tunnel under Georgia Ave that is part of the entrance to the Petworth Metro Station there is always water covering a large portion of the floor. At first, I thought its was due to people tracking in snow, but over time its become apparent that its some sort of perpetual leak. The floor tiles get pretty slick when wet. Any information on plans for repair?”

We finally have a name for the new Japanese-French restaurant coming from the owners of Petworth Citizen and Room 11 – Crane and Turtle.

Their facebook page says:

“Crane And Turtle is a chef-driven, neighborhood restaurant that celebrates the marriage of Chef Makoto Hamamura’s great passions – Japanese and French cooking.”

Owner Paul Ruppert tells me they are planning on an April opening – check out some renderings of the inside:

Seating capacity 25.

and hopefully the outside will look like this:

From the MPD-3D Listserv:

“I just got this text from one of my neighbors on the 600 block of Rock Creek Chuch Rd. It happened in the alley behind their house (off of Quebec Pl) “Something disturbing happened at my house sat morn around 1am. Someone tried to remove the security door from my basement back entrance. They removed most of the screws, and the door was hanging off the house. We were all home. I guess they would have kicked the back door down. The vibration and The dog alerted me, and I started turning on lights. The motion sensor light didn’t discourage them and it was on while they were working. Had to let someone know.” Just a heads up to the Park View and Petworth neighborhoods.”

From an email:

“We [Three Little Pigs] get a lot of customers asking us for butchery classes and fresh cuts of meat. So, we just decided to offer both – at the same time! The idea is simple, you, and if you’d like, a couple of pals pitch in to buy half or a whole pig from TLP (the pigs come from Polyface Farm). You come in on Saturday (and if need be Sunday) and we will teach you how to butcher your pig any way you’d like. From there, we portion everything out and you take your custom meats home for yourself or to share among your friends and family. It’s going to be awesome! Here is the breakdown:

1/2 pig weighs approx 110lbs. The price per pound is $3.75
Lecture and instructional – Half Pig: $375 -or- Whole Pig: $500
The service takes place on weekends only (scheduling at least two weeks ahead)
Each customer can bring two guests. Additional guests can attend for an additional $100 per person
We will be selling cutting boards, butcher knives, and aprons can be purchased at a discounted rate
TLP will provide lunch and kitchen tour to all guests”

Last we checked back in December we knew good things were coming to Lyman’s Tavern coming to the former laundromat space next to Red Derby. Well I got to take a peek over the weekend and holy cow this place is looking sweet. I haven’t been this excited about a new bar since, well, Red Derby opened. I’m happy to say it’s looking like Lyman’s will be a worthy neighbor to the Derby. This is another real deal non pretentious neighborhood bar. The space is dominated by a huge wooden bar. In the back there will be a little stage for music and three pinball machines. In the way way back is a small kitchen. And the best news – they open in March. Stay tuned for an exact date.

They didn’t want me to spoil the surprise by posting photos but here’s a little tease showing the corner of that sweet bar:

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering what the rules are for sidewalk snow removal for businesses. I have noticed that the Wendy’s and the 7-11 on Georgia ave in Petworth don’t clear their stretches of sidewalk when it snows. The construction site at Shepherd is bad too.

I was walking from Quincy up to the Yes tonight and the sidewalks were awful in front of those places.

Each place is on the corner so the uncleared stretch is really long. I walk with my baby in a carrier so slipping is scary, but at least I can take a detour, it would be impossible with a wheelchair or cane.

I would think that the businesses are responsible for the sidewalk. I would love to know who should be shoveling.”

I believe the businesses are responsible for shoveling, sadly, it is rarely/difficult to enforce.

And below is another one from a reader:

“Another terrible sidewalk situation. The public squares downtown are just covered in ice from the last few days of melt/re-freeze. I had to help an older lady with a cane from falling this morning. The sidewalks of McPherson and Franklin Squares are practically impassable and flat-out dangerous.

Do you know if the Park service does any sort of snow removal or ice mitigation?”
