Park Place apartments at New Hampshire and Georgia Ave, NW

The wait for retail/restaurants at Park Place has been exhausting for those that live nearby (no disrespect to Sala Thai, Subway and Cricket). That wait, knock wood – knock wood, is almost over. Globest reported:

“TA Realty is acquiring the apartment building at 850 Quincy St NW for approximately $62 million or $385,093 per unit.”

I’m told the building will stay rental and for retail we can expect a bank, small restaurant and other retail coming soon. Here’s where I think the bank will be located:

Interesting update on the Old Soldiers Home (AFRH) from the Washington Business Journal:

“The Armed Forces Retirement Home could be ready to select a team this summer to remake a substantial portion of its 272-acre campus in Northwest D.C., nearly a decade since it raised the prospect of letting private developers build on an unused part of its campus near The Catholic University of America.”

From MPD:

“Just before 3am, units on patrol heard gunshots in the area of 9th and Kennedy Sts NW. Shortly thereafter, three victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds were located in the 5300 blk of 8th St NW. All victims were transported to an area hospital. One of the victims has been pronounced. The other two victims are in stable condition. This case is being investigated by the Homicide Branch. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

UPDATE from MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a triple shooting that has resulted in a fatality. On Sunday, October 20, 2014, at approximately 2:43 am, members of the Fourth District responded to a call for the report of a shooting in the 5300 block of 8th Street, Northwest. Upon arrival, they located three adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local hospital, where one of the victims, 29-year-old Jabari Fields of Landover, Md. succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.”

“Dear PoPville,

You know, you posted these photos a while back about the Peep Inn and the old bar on Georgia Avenue. Before it is knocked down (That is what the real estate guy on the sign told me when I called), it would be interesting know if people know anything about the old “PEEP IN” bar — how long ago it was open, what was it like, etc etc etc, what the history is. Was it even called “PEEP INN” or is that recycled glass??

I’ve always been fascinated by this place! Would love to get some insight into its history. I even called the DCRA and liquor license bureau to find out, but nothing came up. Clearly it was a bar.”

DCCX_Cyclocross_Petworth

From an email:

“The DCCX cyclocross bike race takes place this Saturday and Sunday, October 18th and 19th at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (Rock Creek Church Road at Upshur St, NW). With over 700 racers already registered for each day of racing, DCCX will once again be one of the biggest cyclocross races in the country. Entry is free.

If you don’t know what cyclocross is, think road bike racing, meets mountain bike racing, meets trail running.

Both days of racing begins at 8:15am and concludes with a “Rookie” race at 5:15pm. The course is centered around the fish pond on the lower grounds of the Soldier’s Home. It is a great course for spectators as racers are visible from almost any point on the course. There will also be a kids race course available throughout the day.

This year Oskar Blues will be on hand with a variety of their craft beer offerings including Dale’s Pale Ale, Mama’s Lil’ Pils, Old Chub and others.  Come enjoy their “can-in-hand” culture as well as some of their special kegs.  The beer garden will be the place to be in 2014. Staples Corner Liquorswill be working with Oskar Blues to once again ensure that your refreshment needs are satisfied.  Come out and pair an Oskar Blues with food from DC Slices, Baja Fresh, the DC Dutch club and Captain cookie & the milkman to help keep the party going.  (more…)

Happy Thursday morning!!! Back in July 2013 Rib Pit (the lounge had been closed for years) had closed at the corner of 14th and Randolph St, NW and was for sale.

From the Washington Post:

“The restaurateur duo of Jackie Greenbaum and Gordon Banks (Jackie’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley) have another concept in the works: a casual Italian restaurant opening at 3907 14th St. NW in spring 2015. The restaurant’s working name is Little Coco’s.”

Ed. Note: It’s not clear if Little Coco’s will take up just the former Rib Pit Lounge space or the Rib Pit as well but obviously we’ll have lots of updates leading to their spring 2015 opening – can’t wait to learn more!

arkansas_crash

“Dear PoPville,

There was yet another crash on the 4500 block of Arkansas Avenue last night. Our neighbor’s car was crashed into by an SUV, pushed 20+ feet off the curb onto the sidewalk and ultimately into a tree.

The SUV that caused the crash fled the scene leaving debris all over the street and police took over an hour to respond to the 911 call. When they did, they were unable to run the license plate due to a broken computer.

This is the latest in an ongoing pattern of crashes on our street made possible by unsafe traffic conditions, which was covered extensively in the news this spring and summer. DDOT made safety recommendations which have not been implemented, and the city has refused to eliminate the rush hour lane which encourages speeding on our residential street. We have been given no support in resolving this issue.

The family whose car was totaled last night has two young kids, and there have been others who’ve been gravely injured. I’m just a concerned neighbor who is trying to spread the word.

More information about our campaign to make our street safer is available here.”
