“Dear PoPville,

My pup’s day care accidentally closed the car door on his tail and broke it (pretty bad break with bone exposed). They immediately took him to Petworth Animal Hospital around 5:55pm on a Wednesday evening. They admitted him and promptly closed at regular business hours at 6pm. At 6:20p after speaking to the van driver by phone, he said I will get my dog back from the vet on Friday (2 days later), which I found unacceptable and immediately called the vet.

To my incredible shock, their phone was unavailable and I wasn’t even able to leave a message because the mailbox was full! At that point I had no idea whether my pup received any care or what state he was in. I also called my regular vet in Dupont and asked if anyone had requested his records, they had not. Note, this was Wednesday evening and Petworth Animal Hospital does NOT have hours on Thursday. I spent all night agonizing about the state of my pup and drove first thing in the morning to see if I could retrieve him. I spent 4hrs in the rain waiting for someone to show up at NOON at which point (more…)

They’re finally here: Cocktails inspired by #StrangerThings. Carlie Steiner (of Stir Bartending Co.) is back behind the bar for her #VariationsOnATheme series, where she creates unique drinks (eleven of them, perhaps??) on a new theme. Grab your friends, grab your walkie-talkies, and join us for drinks that may or may not give you telekinetic powers.”

Check out the menu after the jump. (more…)

found-bike

I found a Schwinn Mountain bike in Petworth, around about a block from the metro discarded in an alley. I left it for awhile thinking maybe someone just stopped for a bit but it was moved to the sidewalk and placed upside down. Pretty sure it was stolen or maybe taken for a joy ride. The tires are flat and I didn’t see if it rode well (gears working, etc) but the frame is in good condition.”

From Little Coco’s:

“Monday is a big day at Coco’s! We’re finally opening for coffee and homemade pastries – cream puffs, donuts, muffins, scones – starting at 8am. Our espresso is from La Colombe and drip coffee from Ceremony.

Lunch will start at 11:30 and include pizza, sandwiches (my favorite is the P.L.T. – Porchetta, Lettuce and Tomato on homemade Focaccia), and salads.

Then, starting at 4pm it’s Pizza night. Just $9 for any pie and $30 for a pizza and a pitcher! Every Monday.

Thanks to Rachel for a photo of the new signage going up at Red Derby. Another amazing bar approaching a decade. File the owners squarely in the good people column:

“It’s that time of year for our annual Halloween fundraiser for the kiddos at DASH [District Alliance for Safe Housing]:

Sunday Oct 9th from 3pm – 8pm, we’ll be hosting a Derby Oktoberfest in support of DASH … we’ll be grilling up brats on the barbecue ($3 per), as well as toasting up pretzels ($1); with 100% of proceeds going to our Halloween DASH drive. Also, anyone who brings in a pound of candy or a costume (there are 63 kiddos this year) will receive happy hour prices all night long. In addition, there will be a gaggle of German beer specials … and, of course, the ability to make any beer on our 100+ list a German combo by adding a shot of Jagermeister. (For those who prefer wine… we’ll be offering our Clean Slate Riesling for $15 a bottle.)

At 9pm, we’ll be showing the second Presidential Debate on the Derby’s Big Screen. We’ll be fashioning a game of Bingo (whereby the proceeds from bingo cards also will go to DASH).”

kansas-georgia

A reader reports:

“Looked like a bike-car collision on southbound Kansas Avenue at the Kansas-Georgia ave intersection (there are bike lanes on Kansas in that area). Couldn’t see how bad the situation was, several police cars and a fire truck on the scene around 9AM. Not sure what happened in this situation, but from experience:

1) cars coming from Varnum St (either crossing Kansas to continue on Varnum, or turning onto Georgia) when cars on Kansas are bumper-to-bumper fail to notice that the bike lanes keep moving, and

2) cars heading south on Kansas and planning to make a right onto Upshur after they cross Georgia will often encroach onto the bike lanes in anticipation of the upcoming turn.”
