Winter(ish) is coming.

“The Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District is pleased to announce the opening of the Canal Park Ice Rink for the 2017-2018 Winter Season in mid-November. Canal Park Ice Rink remains the only ice rink in the city with a unique figure-eight skate path and half a block from a metro stop. The Canal Park dancing water jets will be turned off by October 31st to permit ice rink construction, and the ice rink will open as soon as construction is complete.
The grand opening celebration is set for Friday, November 17th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, but the rink will be open regular hours that day as well. (more…)

JP Morgan Moves to Protect Its Capitol Yards Real Estate
Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6D/Waterfront has found a powerful ally – JP Morgan Asset Management – in its protest of zoning relief for a proposed new apartment building at 100 K Street SE.
The 150-year-old multinational has hired local attorneys Holland & Knight to represent the interests of the property next door at 909 New Jersey Avenue SE, which it bought on behalf of institutional investors in 2012.
The developers of 100 K Street SE, GH Group LLC, are proposing to raze the auto body shop currently on the site and build a 12-story mixed-use building with 34 apartments. According to DC zoning, no window in a new residential building of this type shall be within 40 feet of existing windows. (more…)

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld today announced that Metrorail will remain open an additional hour tonight for fans attending the Nationals/Cubs game at Nationals Park, as well as the grand opening of The Wharf development in Southwest DC, thanks to Exelon and Pepco.
The cost of the extended service – $100,000 – is being funded by Exelon, the parent company of Pepco.
After Metro’s regular closing time, four stations — Navy Yard-Ballpark, Waterfront, L’Enfant Plaza and Capitol South – will remain open for “entry only.” All other Metro stations will be available for “exit only.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I had a really bothersome experience. I was out walking my dog in the navy yard area, the part where all the row houses are. I noticed about 4 teenager-ish kids hanging out at corner and they began to disperse as I was walking up the block. I wasn’t paying attention and had my earphones in, and I didn’t hear them say anything to me until I was past them, and so when I finally noticed that one of them had said excuse me and was trying to get my attention. At this point all four – two on a bike and two on foot – had come back to talk to me (they had made it like halfway across the street. I took my earphones out and this is the story they told me:
They said they saw a car hit a dog, stop, pick up the dog and put it in the public trash can on the corner of the block. They said they got the guys tag numbers and that some lady had already reported it and that they were trying to find out whose dog it was. They asked if I lived around here and said that I should look and see if I know the dog. (more…)
