From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Bowser today was joined by Events DC, the District’s convention and sports authority, to break ground on the multi-purpose recreational fields that begin the RFK Campus redevelopment plan. Construction will begin in September 2018 and the fields are expected to open for play in March 2019.

“The community has waited a long time to see this land put to good use, and today, we are all proud to get this project started,” said Mayor Bowser. “When these fields are complete, this will be the community space our residents deserve. Here at RFK, Washingtonians will have it all – the amenities of a big city, access to a thriving waterfront, and fantastic outdoor fields and play space.”

The groundbreaking will transform nearly 27 acres of asphalt into three new state-of-the-art artificial turf fields with community amenities. (more…)

Around 11:30pm Jill asked:

“what’s up with the circling helicopter near Potomac Ave Metro?”

From MPD:

“Illegal Firearm Recovered and Arrest Made in Potomac Gardens

Just wanted to take a minute to make everyone aware that last night Officers Branson and Tyson were working as part of our enhanced deployment in the PSA 106 and the Potomac Gardens area. While responding to backup a DC Housing Police Officer looking for a wanted subject, they observed an individual inside Potomac Gardens attempting to stash a handgun. After a brief foot chase, Officers Branson and Tyson stopped the individual without incident and recovered a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm handgun from their person. Our officers are working hard to take illegal firearms off your neighborhood streets, so I wanted to take a moment to share this success with everyone. Have a great day!”

“Dear PoPville,

We recently moved to Hill East and while it’s a generally great area, there is one issue we are wrestling with. Hopkins Public Housing essentially hosts outdoor concerts every Sunday morning with various singers. Following this they hook up the ipod and play music till 8 PM. The music is very loud, and we can clearly hear it inside our brick home. The music can be heard for blocks. On Memorial day, they sang and played music all day after they had their ‘concert’ on Sunday. We’re not objecting to playing music, we just don’t want to hear it in our homes.

Despite numerous neighbors’ efforts to contact 311, the police, council members, and asking them to turn down their music, it never stops. No one seems to care about our complaints. We honestly don’t know what to do at this point. Allowable residential noise levels are 60 decibels which is equivalent to normal conversation, and they are obviously disturbing the peace. (See pdf link on bylaws here.)

Thoughts on next steps?”

Ed. Note: To preempt the comments real quick- Say what you gotta say, but please try to say it nicely. Advice, however arguably warranted, will likely not be received well if delivered only with vitriol/derision.

From Jen, HillEast resident of 15 years:

“Around 730pm last night [Tuesday], Goldy the cockapoo was struck and killed by a car in the crosswalk at the intersection of Constitution and 12th St NE. The motorist was traveling East on Constitution through the four way stop intersection. Goldy’s human, a Capitol Hill resident, was on the other end of the leash in the crosswalk with Goldy when the car struck.

Dr. Antkowiak of AtlasVet heard shouts from his front stoop and ran down to the intersection with two friends. Goldy was on her side in critical shape. Dr. A got a quick history from the owner while starting CPR. Unfortunately, Goldy was too far gone for resuscitation and passed away within 60 seconds or less. The driver of the car did come back and gave Goldy’s human his information. (more…)
