822 H Street, NE – entrance on 9th Street
“Dear PoPville,
Just wondering: for the last few weeks, each time I’ve walked by Chupacabra (9th St NE between H and I) – whether early afternoon or evening, it’s been closed. Has it closed down? I didn’t check storefront for a sign, I must admit.”
Yup, there’s a sign out front saying they’ll reopen in March. It’s likely due to the weather turning cold and most of the seating being outdoors. Kinda like how Standard/Garden District closes for winter at 14th and S St, NW.

“Went to the ANC meeting last night. Douglass development was there to discuss their plans. 3 floors of retail (1 of which would be underground). Apartments/condos on top. 32 Total units? No parking. Possibly a zipcar spot. Studios – 2 bedrooms. Earliest they would break ground would be February 2016, but this is not likely they said. Will be later.
9730 sq ft of retail on the largest floor. Also, this will have a stone facade, Not brick. This is the old HSDC building.

Back in February of last year we first learned that the former Z Mart space located at 806 H St, NE would become a Chez Hareg Organic Market. They were originally supposed to open in April but there had been very little visible progress. At some point the coming soon sign had also disappeared. I’m happy to share some photos from a reader that show the market is still coming. Updates when they open.

When looking into the new sports bar coming to H Street, I learned some sad news for next door neighbor Mike’s Thrift Store. The building is for lease. The owner tells me that he will remain open until it does. The owner is super nice – so if there any thrifters out there – there’s still time to show him some love.

1427 H Street, NE
In April of 2013 we noted that 1427 H Street, NE was up for lease:

Now a liquor license application has been posted here for Halftime Sports Bar located at 1427 H Street:
“This is a new “C” Tavern. Sports Bar with sports shows on TV’s throughout the bar. Food to be served will be french fries, hamburgers and chicken wings.”

Also back in Nov. 2013 we learned that H Street would be getting a huge sports bar called Sin Bin Sports Bar & Restaurant located a block away at 1336 H Street, NE. It’ll be interesting to see if two sports bars survive being located so close together. Updates (on both sports bars) when they get closer to opening.
Halftime Sports Bar will be located a few storefronts west of the Argonaut:

Alleged Pick Pocket Robbery January 27, 2014 at H & Pizza Washington, DC
“Dear PoPville,
DC friends be on the lookout for pick pockets. On Monday, January 27, 2014 around noon I was having lunch with a friend at H and Pizza in H st NE, DC. Long story short: while we were having lunch a lady between the ages of 45-55 stole her wallet from her purse. An hour later they had already charged over $1200 to her credit cards. Since everything happened so fast I thought about going back to the store and file a police report. A day later the management of the restaurant released the videos to me, at first I didn’t see anything. But upon a closer look it was clear that this lady is a “professional” there are no coincidences in her acts.”
