Thanks to Dave for sending: “Looks like a bakery is eventually going into the former Johnny Rockets M Street location. [3131 M Street, NW]

Hold up.., the application is to a person named Andy Taylor. Googling that name with “bakery” pops up Levain Bakery.

Are we getting a Levain Bakery?!”

STAY TUNED.

“Dear PoPville,

For the past 14 or so years, my parents and I have gone to Hu’s Shoes in Georgetown on Mother’s Day so my mom can pick out a pair of shoes after brunch. We stumbled upon the store years ago, and have kept up the tradition ever since, rain or shine. The guys always sit down to catch up on what’s happened the past year, and patiently help as my mom tries on every pair of flats and my dad riddles them with dad jokes. We look forward to it every year.

Today, knowing we wouldn’t be able to come in, I reached out by email to let the guys know that we are thinking of them and will be in as soon as social distancing regulations ease up. (more…)

Ed. Note: DC’s First Cat Cafe, Crumbs & Whiskers, opened in June 2015.

From an email:

“Hey C&W Fam,

My name is Kanchan and I’m the founder of Crumbs & Whiskers. I want to take a few minutes to share what’s happening at C&W with you, and how the virus has been impacting us.

Things are really, really tough right now. As an experiential business, we rely on our booking & reservation sales to fund our operations. For the past month, we haven’t had that, which has been really difficult for us. We applied for every loan and grant that we qualified for, but unfortunately, we didn’t receive anything before loans ran out of funds.

As of now, Crumbs & Whiskers is surviving. We will most likely be permanently closing one of our locations – our DC cat cafe. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was hoping you could call attention to the problem of MedStar Georgetown employees discarding used personal protective equipment–like gloves, masks, and medical caps (see above)–on the streets and sidewalks of Burleith. While this has medical waste issue has been consistent June 2019, the problem has taken on special significance in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The community has to track the problem.

As of writing, approximately 129 medical masks, gloves, caps, and the like have been found in Burleith, including 42 since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic on March 11th. (more…)

From Humane Rescue Alliance: “Spring is here and with that comes ducklings. A mother duck and her babies were stuck in a courtyard in an apartment complex on Water St. NW, so Humane Rescue Alliance animal control officers and City Wildlife came to the rescue.

HRA officers were able to round up all 14 ducklings and the mother duck on Tuesday and then release them in a nearby canal. “
