Earlier in the year we learned that Mastro’s was coming to the former M&S Grill space downtown. The new liquor license placard says:
“Applicant requests an expansion of seats from 220 to 420 and entertainment endorsement to include dancing. Total occupancy load of 520.”
Mastro’s website says:
“Mastro’s collection of sophisticated, classic Steakhouses and Ocean Club Seafood locations are recognized for their combination of world-class service, highly acclaimed cuisine, and live entertainment in an elegant yet energetic atmosphere. A truly unparalleled dining experience…”
You can see their Chicago menu here.

From Franklin Square Park on the 14th Street side
“was an officer in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later in the United States Navy. He is widely credited as “The Father of the American Navy” (and shares that moniker with John Paul Jones) and was appointed a Captain in the Continental Navy on December 7, 1775. He was the first Captain placed in command of a US warship commissioned for service under the Continental flag.
After the war, he became America’s first commissioned naval officer, at the rank of Commodore, receiving his commission from President George Washington in 1797.”

Thanks to all who’ve sent updates on the progress of &pizza coming to the former clothing store on K Street between 14th and 15 St, NW.

Looks like some serious progress has been made on the buildout:

Bub and Pop’s applied for a liquor license back in Nov. 2013. You can see their menu here and apparently they got their liquor license:

Thanks to a reader for sending from 6th and Indiana Ave, NW:
“Major stinky steam plume coming from a spot on 6th Street that was dug out and covered with one of those metal plates. Sewage. Smelled like sewage.”
Could this be the source of that terrible smell folks have been noticing since May?

@Caryn_Levy tweets us just before 4:30pm:
“Serious car fire at 17th & Penn. near the White House. Hope no one was injured. #dc”
And @JonEasley tweets a different angle below:

“Dear PoPville,
Any idea why all along K Street the lamp posts and traffic poles are being repositioned from their traditional spot along the curb to now being in the middle of the sidewalk? This picture was taken at 15th and K Street, NW.”
Anyone else notice other posts/poles moved from the curb to the middle of the sidewalk?

Back in February we first learned that a Native Foods Cafe was planned for the former Sizzling Express space at 18th and M St, NW just off Connecticut Ave. A Native Foods Cafe is also planned for Penn Quarter in the Navy Memorial Plaza. Thanks to a reader for sending the updated photo above and Veg News reports:
“On September 30, vegan fast-casual restaurant Native Foods Café will open its first East Coast eatery in the heart of Washington, DC. Opening at 1150 Connecticut Avenue in the Dupont neighborhood, Native Foods is known for artisan, plant-based fare like bowls, burgers, wraps, tacos, and specialty salads. The Chicago-based restaurant group plans to open a second location in DC later this year.”
